Alien Earth Hybrids problem
>lie on a bed next to a new body
>your mind gets copied and pasted into the new body
>they kill you in your old body
>your copied mind in the new body goes on living thinking its you
>claim this is curing death when its ironically literally killing you
What am I missing here?

its a common tv/movie trope and you're right but i wouldnt be surprised if irl normies are so stupid they would believe the new them is actually them. normies fall for anything so all it takes is an authority figure to tell them the new them is them and they don't think enough for themselves to question it. also its possible most normies dont even have souls so theres nothing to "them" other than their memories so once copied over theres practically no difference between the old them and the new them because they were just soulless automaton meat puppets anyway.

Brain cant be copied because any process to detect the state that matter is in alters the matter (Heisenberg uncertainty principle). Even if you could copy it perfectly if metaphysics allowed that copy contained your consciousness it would seem to be paradoxical because the original could still exist and you'd have a single consciousness controlling multiple localities of space

I don't think they need this kind of stuff, it's pretty clear that the ship went down in their territory so they can do whatever they want, if they want to send soldiers so be it. What really is strange is how nobody knew the ship was coming after crashing into that station/ring near the moon, it's clear that in the Alien universe space travel is insanely common, to the point the crew in the first movie are basically space truckers, any idiot can do their job.

That it's not a problem at all. The show is clearly aware of it and presents it as equally revolutionary as creepy. If anything, I'm surprised by how open the show is to be seen from an anti-trans angle. It's not necessarily solely anti-trans, because you can make the argument that it is indeed the only solution these kids have, but it's still shown as dehumanizing and pushed by the interests of big corporations.

That's not how that works. The soul doesn't exist. Consciousness is just a collection of prefrontal neurons working in tandem via coordinated synapses to create the illusion of a sense of "self" for the multicellular lifeform, which in and of itself is trillions of cells functioning in unison for the benefit of the macroscale vessel.

Edgar Allan Poe wrote something like this and called it Metempsychosis in one of his short stories where some old guy died and his soul transferred into the body of a horse that his enemy sought to dominate but killed him instead.

I used Google to look up what story it was and it was probably Metzengerstein. Google's AI said that other stories included the idea of Metempsychosis which also includes "Ligeia" where the guy's dead wife is trying to take over the body of his new wife and "The Black Cat" where an animal lover tortures a Black Cat and another cat appears that looks like the cat he previously killed and he goes insane and kills his wife. Masters of Horror adapted "The Black Cat" but combined it with E.A. Poe's actual life.

There was an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie where he gets knocked unconscious, regains consciousness and returns home to find out that a clone has taken his place. In GiTS, their brains were literally & physically transferrred into cybernetic exoskeletons encased in cortex shells before being placed into a humanoid frame.
In Alien Earth, the minds of the sick kids were copied and pasted into data banks stored on circuit boards in premade synthetic vessels; they're homonculi imitating humans. Not the same as a literal brain transplant.

Motoko Kusanagi's brain and spinal cord are real human tissue and implanted into human-like robotic shells instead of being a copy. Kind of similar to Androids 17 and 18 from Dragonball.

Anyone know if the robot humans in the Alien Earth show are made of synthetic material that closely mimics human biology as if they were grown in a lab? Like if it was synthetic flesh similar to human biology but made from bioengineered products if that makes any sense?

There is a podcast novel called "Handbook for the Criminally Insane" that has a female android who is entirely machine/robotic and her brain or consciousness is housed in a separate location and is the size of a small house or basement, or in other words her human-like consciousness needs a lot of machinery to function. This also makes her tied to a specific location because she can't move far from her brain.

there's no point in asking all these philosophical questions because the show doesn't care to actually offer you food for thought or anything, even the potential good drama between hermit and mc girl, about him not accepting what happened to his sister and rejecting this new wendy entity, causing her conflict, was just breeze past so that they could immediately have them together dealing with the omelette situation.

Actually no. What made Japan such a powerful country in GiTS universe is that they invented the eletronic brain, which can capture the "soul" aka ghost of a person. The plot of the the second movie is all about gangsters going cheap and making copies of kid's ghosts to operate their robots which doesn't work, you need an original ghost and that must be transfered brain to brain or it start losing data and gets corrupt over time.

This is *partly* bullshit, but it's a useful conceit for people who rightly want to dismiss dumbass religiocuck BS about Muh Ineffable Divine Spark Of Muh Soul, but for some reason find it hard grasp that the copy is clearly just that, as would be blatantly obvious if the original was allowed to persist alongside the duplicate; it's a different entity. That said it's relatively easy to apply the Ship of Theseus to the problem, which would tell them that the key to functional transference is continuity of function and experience, ie you'd need something like The Culture series Nets; little nanodevices that essentially grow a second brain inside your brain, sloooooowly taking over the function of individual neurons & synapses when those structures would die off, be replaced, or change their format anyway(focusing on higher brain function first, because desu you could probably simulate lower brain function if you had to based on the data gathered on how your body works while the higher brain is being replaced), so that *eventually*, in a process that takes months or even years, "you" are running entirely on the new functionally unending construct without ever experiencing any subjective *or* objective break in continuity of function.

Nah you seem to have a solid grasp on one of the issues with the show's concept.
It's just an AI reverse engineering a person's personality traits with memory implantation, and I don't find it unbelievable that individual memories will eventually be plainly observable components in the brain we'll eventually be able to tangibly point to. Assuming we haven't done that already and I'm just ignorant on the updates.
Anyway, all of those kids are dead and now there are just robots falsely believing themselves to be reincarnated.
Also anyway, I'm much more dissatisfied that the show is just going to be kinda generic corpo-android-what is life drama but featuring H.R. Giger's Alien design.

Literally you? The contention of the books - and so by extension in this context me - is that the rich are cunts by default, and all that changed with immortality is the capacity for power and control, which is why normal people should escalate from political action to violent action to cast them down and create fair open access to the immortality tech the rich control and exploit. The contention of the show is if the immortality tech didn't exist the rich wouldn't be a real problem because they would individually die and so all you need to do to fix the future world is get rid of immortality, which is fucking retarded because we already live in a world with megarich people and no immortality and the megarich are a huge fucking problem and are already hyper-decadent psychopaths.

In fact, the argument could be made that immortal rich people would be *better* than mortal ones because their level of self-interest in securing the future of the species and planet would increase from nebulous concepts of family and legacy to explicitly personal, stakes that a psychopathic self-absorbed asshole is much more invested in.

That's canon in all versions, Togusa is the least enhanced member of Section 9, he only has normal implants to access the net with some tech to avoid being hacked, while the Major (or Motoko if you will) and Batou are the least human with full android bodies.

I can't remember asI didn't watch the whole 1995 movie. Only really watched the Anime series back in the 2000s and read the original manga in the 2010s. Have yet to read the sequels. But from what I remember in the Anime series, there was enough brain and spine for her consciousness to remain intact. I think at the end of the manga, her brain and spine get transferred to some androgynous dude's body.

Once they are separated, they are having different experiences. So it makes sense to say there are two conscious experiences happening. But before that they are exactly the same. So in order to say that they are not sharing a conscious experience in those moments, you need to justify that consciousness is a physical thing that exists inside their heads separated by space.

I read some forums and they explain there is a difference between cyberbrains and braincases. A cyberbrain swaps organic parts for artificial ones, it can be just a few parts or the whole thing leaving not a single organic cell. Brain-cases are more like life support systems that keep the brain alive even without a body and can be installed in a new body. Full cyborgs are a rarity, both the Major and Batou are full cyborgs, ie they don't have any organic parts anymore, but that's pretty rare since the cost is insanely high. They mention this in the first movie, how they aren't really owners of their own bodies since they can't pay the high maintenance costs.

This is because Mamoru Oshii is a hack, and also American scriptwriters are also hacks. The source manga makes it clear that the cyberbrain is a full human brain in a jar that plugs into an artificial body. >This only explains why we're intelligent but doesn't explain why we're conscious instead of philosophical zombies

Consciousness is like all other intelligence. It is an adaptation bred in to us over millions of years of trial and error.

The creature that first realised it's reflection had a huge advantage over everything else and it stuck around.

Can you even define consciousness over intelligence? Show me something with consciousness and without intelligence. I think they only exist together. Consciousness is what is called an emergent property of intelligence.
Anonymous No.213685298
>>213684999
I can point to something intelligent that may or may not have consciousness, like AI. But I can't point to something conscious that isn't intelligent because I can't determine if anything besides myself is conscious in the first place.

You can't just wave it away as an emergent property without explaining how it emerges. All other emergent properties like temperature or crystalization can be explained properly.
