What was with the mask in 28 years later? When I had watched the trailer it definitely felt like there was going to be a cult involved who wore them but it ultimately just ended up being nothing, it was so lame. Also I know its been said to death already but the ending with jimmy was goofy as fuck like what the hell was that... and personally I think it sucks how they handled the lone Nato soldier. It would have been a lot more interesting to keep someone from the outside world around imo

Only fools appreciate horror for the spooky factor.
True connoisseurs value all the craftsmanship from the cinematography, framing, the use of colors, set and production design, make up, visual effects and the atmosphere the filmmakers are striving to create. Or even a sharp, well-executed script, sometimes playful, sometimes poetic. In fact, I can say my favorite horror films are often the ones that are, in truth, the most comfy.
Horror is an aesthetic genre.

Most movies should be 70 minutes long based on their premises and what actually happens in them. You should be able to go to a movie theater and buy a double feature with a ten minute intermission in between for a discount over a single movie, and you just go to the lobby and buy overpriced snacks or use the bathroom in between, and your double feature ticket tells you which room each of the movies will be in. Half of the rooms should be for 70 minute movies and they are all within one or two minutes of that runtime-wise, so you can buy any double feature you want if the movies are running one after the other. Say they run two at a time. You can find the movie you most want to watch on their website, look at the two movies running before it and the two movies running after it, and pick one of them for your double feature with that movie. Of course some of the options may be repeats since they like to run the same movie multiple times per day, so if you like two movies that have full schedule runtimes, you can pick which one you want to see first in your double feature. One or two usually slow days a week they alternate newer movies and older movies related to them, on the same theme as them, originals and remakes, or so on so that you can get a double feature that will always contain one newer movie and one older movie. Another day should just be random assortments of 90s-to-10s action movies.
But of course the licensing fee stuff is too restrictive and not agile enough for that so Hollywood shoots itself in the foot yet again and the best double feature is the one you make yourself at home.

On the contrary, my friend. I hate how movie critics approach cinema. For your information

God of Gamblers II (1990) is not the true sequel to God of Gamblers (1989). It is actually a sequel to All for the Winner (1990), which is a parody of the original God of Gamblers (1989).

Although Chow Yun-fat appears as the titular character, the God of Gamblers, he is not the protagonist; that role is played by Stephen Chow, who is the main character here, called the Saint of Gamblers.

They later released God of Gamblers III: Back to Shanghai (1991), which is a sequel to God of Gamblers II (1990), again starring Stephen Chow.

The real sequel to God of Gamblers (1989) is God of Gamblers Returns (1994), also released as God of Gamblers 2 (1994) β€” not to be confused with God of Gamblers II (1990). This one stars Chow Yun-fat as the original God of Gamblers.

Finally, God of Gamblers 3: The Early Stage (1997) is the official third film in the series, but in fact it’s a prequel to the original God of Gamblers (1989) with none of the original actors. Again, do not confuse this with God of Gamblers III: Back to Shanghai (1991).

I don't think they ripped Insidious off, but it shares a lot of plot points with Insidious (boy in a coma, otherside wants to take his soul and possess him, ghost people invading real life). And that's a better film even with the Tiny Tim music trying to ruin the ending.

It just fell into generic possession story.
Bring Her Back felt like a big improvement on that front as it was much more focused and coherent.

People always forget but he was very small in Part 2 as well. In fact everyone forgets how wildly inconsistent everything about Jason has been in this franchise since the very beginning and only remember certain parts from certain movies. The ONLY consistent thing in the entire continuity is the axe mark on the mask from Part III that they kept even for Part VIII and Jason Goes to Hell even though the original mask had already been destroyed by Tina in Part VII.

This movie could have easily been better but at least we finally got to see real acting chops from Ella. She actually carried the movie and stopped it from being a complete and utter disaster. At least now I'm excited for her next film with better writing and directing.

If it wasn't under the tremendous weight of needing to be a Hellraiser film, I agree people would rate this one higher.
This film has a surprisingly artful tone to it.

It’s downright near impossible to make a universally appealing horror film for those reasons. Hardcore horror buffs are unbelievably picky and care more about how scary something is and how many (according to them) β€œactual” horror scenes there are rather than how well acted, written and structured a movie is or anything to do with the cinematography, the effects, the set pieces, the locations, even the subtler stuff like atmosphere etc. falls lower on the totem pole for them.

The Exorcist has long been dubbed "the scariest movie ever made" and when people today watch it and find out that's not really true (anymore) they underrate the hell out of it even though it's objectively a well made film otherwise.

But are they wrong for thinking like this when that’s the general purpose of horror: to (try to) make people feel a certain way? It’s hard to say honestly. Compare to thrillers that only promises suspense which is so much easier to do right even when the audience instinctively knows the good guys will never lose.

I actually find that action fans are the ones with incredibly low standards because most of the highest rated action films, which includes superhero shit, on user review aggregator sites have so many cuts and largely unimpressive action scenes, especially if there’s any fist/sword fighting involved, that are both poorly directed and choreographed. Nolan’s movies are the perfect example and not just his Batman stuff either.

>TL;DR: action fans have ludicrously low standards because they don’t actually have a sense for the technique behind it all. They just see big explosions, car chases and fist fights and are easily impressed by it all, while horror fans have ridiculously high standards and often don’t know what the fuck they actually want so they’re never satisfied. They also like to complain about how β€œdesensitized” they are, but will never outright admit that the problem then often lies with them as much as it does with the filmmakers.

>action fans have ludicrously low standards
I like action movies and that's partially true.
>They just see big explosions, car chases and fist fights and are easily impressed
Doesn't apply to me. Sometimes I want something simple and enjoyable, much like most slasher films are. If I want something with more substance and overall better, it's hard to beat Asian action movies. I've seen low budget Jap action movies that put Hollywood to shame in terms of choreography.

If I really introspect I think you're right, in that while I know what kind of films I'd make if I had millions, I have a hard time reconciling my thoughts with what I actually like. I think horror is just quite diverse.
For example - The Blair Witch Project has no special effects, no grand cinematography, basically lacks all of the film elements I normally want and relies heavily on great acting which I normally say I don't care much about. But it's one of my favourite horrors.
On one hand I could say I have low standards because a lot of films I like are just a bunch of retards and SFX guys competently pumping blood and slime onto local strippers. But at the same time the surrounding plot, lighting, acting etc. that supports it is actually has to be good, have sovl, but doesn't have to be professional. It can be rough.

Blair Witch is actually a pretty good example of how hard it is to please horror fans. It was and still remains one of the biggest indie hits of all time and someone like Roger Ebert gave it one of his rare full 4 stars because he thought it worked really well as a horror movie, but a loooooot of horrorheads actually think it's super boring because "nothing happens" (which is not really true at all of course) and will rate it low because it wasn't stimulating enough for them and it's not a movie that otherwise works as anything but horror, just not the traditional kind that some people have come to expect from slashers and creature features.

Those people are probably the reason why the shitty sequel decided it would be a good idea to actually show the witch and turning it into a generic monster chaser flick instead with needless exposition. TBWP is just one of those movies that only a small percentage of people into horror can actually fully appreciate for what it manages to accomplish with so little. I know this sounds pretentious but it is what it is.
