It's the writers' show. They could have said it was a month later and had a couple of scenes of the kids learning. Instead it looks like they're barely a week after Wendy's own transition to being a Hybrid (Kirsh is the Synth).
We could have had the kids be characters, seeing what they chose to focus on, as well as making Hybrids more impressive by having a line about how fast they were learning, feeding into Kavalier's stated goal of talking to someon smarter than himself. Their confidence in going in then gets shattered as they confront the horrors of what is on the ship, ramping up audience investment. They can also get chances to show what they've learned, again reinforcing what niche Hybrids are intended to fill.
But no. It's just a dumb idea pushed forward solely for the sake of having idiots that do not know what they are doing cause a chain of events required for the plot.
