No, not at all. The movie is better. I read The Beach and The Tesseract by Garland both in a library when I was younger and they were underwhelming and poorly written.

It did have quite the affect on me as a young teen. Tilda Swinton is good as always too. Overall Alex Garland has had a great career since.

DiCaprio is badly miscast in this and it should have been Ewan McGregor as was the original intention, but when Leo straight after Titanic says he wants to do this project who's gonna say no. It was for the better that Boyle and McGregor ended up forging their own careers anyway.
