I don’t see any restaurants here just fast food goyslop
But to answer your question no -at least not here- ours are usually a car parking lot, a truck parking lot, a building that does deli + restrooms, a petrol station (now with some ev chargers) and some picnic tables. Much smaller than what I see in the OP
Look up “aire de jugy A6” in maps for your typical motorway stop, just one among hundreds

The main town of Breezewood is a few miles away from the rest stop center catering to travelers. It's a small town in the middle of nowhere like many towns in America, so the gas stations, restaurants, and hotels provide good work for the people who live there.

If you use highways to travel any significant distance then it makes sense that hotels, restaurants, and large stores would cluster around highway exits. No one wants to have to cut through a bunch of residential streets to reach a walmart or whatever.

I'm not an american but it does seem nice, travelling all your million highways being able to go anywhere pull into a motel with my girl maybe go out at 2am and get some pizza hut or taco bell, it honestly seems like a comfy way to live I don't get why people shit on it
