It's a really good movie. It was a box office disaster that had its release cancelled in most countries after awful US results.

Paul W.S. Anderson is a really good director when he's pushed to actually try, as opposed to coasting through production on cruise control. Every time I watch Soldier I think, "Man, I wish Paul would make movies like this again."

That shot where Caine swallows the pills and tosses the vial that bounces in slow motion bugged me for years. I eventually realized it's a direct homage to that Kurt Russel movie Backdraft. Similarly, the shot of the soldier's boot entering the frame? That's a reference to Griff stepping onto his hoverboard in Back to the Future 3. Paul W.S. Anderson is very talented, but holy shit he is a Tarantino-grade visual plagiarist. Practically every shot in his films is assembled from pieces of some other movie he saw.
