I just watched Easy Rider. WTF man. I'm not American and I don't really understand the cultural divide.

Are rednecks really like that or is it just a stereotype from California lefties? Were women really that horny in the 60's? Why did rednecks hate hippies so much?

Imagine living your whole life very conservative, fought in ww2 and then all of a sudden a new subculture out of California emerges. Drugs, long hair, weird clothes, weird people, talking about feelings, kids running away or dropping out of school to live in communes instead of raising a family and getting a job. It was also the cold war so alot of people thought it was some sort of commie take over. Its like how in current times we can't wrap out heads around ultra left leaning people completely degenerating our society x1000. They had the best country in the world after WW2 and boomer teens were all of a sudden disenfranchised with the great life they had and decided to rebel against the system. When I watched this as a kid I thought the bikers were cool and the rednecks were violent savages.

Yep, it is not your typical movie so people that go in expecting the MCU or some Disney streaming crap are going to be heavily disappointed. It set a lot of the artistic trappings and influences for the MC content subgenre in ways that people who are incapable of picking up on things past a very surface level just aren't going to understand. It's also a great movie to put on with the projector at a party and have some great food, cold beers, and good conversations with friends.

Yes, rednecks in the south hated hippies and would beat them up and kill them if they got the chance. Hippies were mostly long haired druggies and the rednecks were raised by depression era parents. Small town people hated outsiders and anyone not belonging to a local family. Even today if you go into small towns in the south you better have family or good reason to be there.

I found it to be very depressing instead of the freedom loving '60's fun loving movie it looks like on the surface. The rednecks beating Jack Nicholson and eventually killing the bikers makes it not an enjoyable watch for me.
