It was a Hollywood setup. Chris Rock knew he was going to be slapped and was ready for it, and Will Smith was supposed to do The Slap and there was supposed to be a different reaction to the rest of this little sketch but Chris Rock stopped there because he was not instructed.

Will Smith was totally surprised with how the sketch ended right then and there making him look so horrible but he couldn't go against it because he thought he was still playing along.

To Chris Rock's credit he was not in on it but was simply used as well. This is something no one talks about for fear of repercussions.

Believe it or not, these kinds of PR setups are very common.

I work in live event production and this makes perfect sense. 98% of the crew ignore anything that's outside their specific role and even the show caller will sit there and gawk at out of the ordinary shit until their brain resets.

Whilst I didn't work at this Academy Awards, I have worked them in the past... you would be absolutely gobsmacked at the level of disorganisation for something the scale that it is. They literally spend months planning certain things, but then stuff will still not be prepared or even changed last minute as late as the morning of the actual ceremony. Stars and nepos don't want to rehearse and take time out of their schedules unless completely completely necessary. It's very conceivable to me that this wasn't staged and people just in fact didn't know how to react in the moment.
