Brand damage. Man of Steels box office only proves that audiences were excited to see a Superman movie and had good will with DC after Nolan’s generational defining Batman trilogy. Remember, Man of Steel was being marketed off the back of the dark knight rises. The marketing had “From Chris Nolan” and “From the director of the dark knight trilogy” in all the ads and trailers. Then the movie came out and everyone except third world Indians hated it. People had faith in the sequel because it had Batman in it. And look what happened with BvS: it had a record breaking opening weekend and a record breaking second weekend drop off. Everyone hated it. Word of mouth spread that it was terrible. And what should’ve been a 1.5-2 billion dollar movie came out to be a measly 800 million dollar flop that didn’t even break even. Don’t underestimate the brand damage MoS and BvS and Suicide Squad did to DC. The brand never recovered after this. Warner tried to pivot and hire new talent but it was too late, everything was flopped except Aquaman, which was really just a Jason Mamoa movie during his peak popularity.
