I'm two episodes in.

None of the actors are half as good as Gandolfini, Falco and Bracco, although maybe their writing is just boring and they have nothing to work with. Not a single laugh, btw.

Also the similarities with the sopranos reveal a pitiful lack of creativity. Oh boy, an unfaithful male lead and psychotherapy scenes? Where'd you think that up, mr. weiner?

>None of the actors are half as good as Gandolfini, Falco and Bracco
Gandolfini was in a league of his own, but the rest of the cast of Mad Men is terrific, and just as good as the Sopranos
the writing is completely different though, the characters are more contained and less abrasive
>although maybe their writing is just boring and they have nothing to work with
it's not a show set around events, but rather about characters and their day-to-day
not everyone's cup of tea, but worth it if you're willing to give it a shot
>Not a single laugh, btw.
no shit, it's not a comedy
it has some snarky humor here and there, but not as present as in the sopranos, for instance
also, I really don't see why you keep comparing the shows. They're completely different in practically every regard
>similarities with the sopranos
such as?
>an unfaithful male lead
every other show has this
>psychotherapy scenes
short lived arc, if you bothered to watch for more than a couple episodes
again, if you keep looking for The Sopranos, you're gonna be dissappointed in every show out there
just watch Mad Men for what it is
or don't, really, not everyone digs it

don and peggy are the best written characters on the show, they just do the same things over and over until the end.

peggy's best male relationship, in her own mind, calls her up in the series finale and apologizes for things she doesn't begin to understand, leaving her hanging. like every man. the ultimate confusion.

don is just an addict and hates himself, like most addicts, so he has also become addicted to the feeling of pulling himself out of it with lies.

Be real with me, if you weren't feeling like a contrarian you would call this kind of flanderised character writing redundant.
Don has maybe (2) good arcs with women, the one with the NUTZ ad guy's wife and the woman at the California villa in S2 who uses him for sex.

I went the other way, having watched MM first and Sopranos second. I think both stand at the pinnacle of television, I just prefer Sopranos because of the humour. That said, there's a tremendous amount of humour in MM too and every aspect of it is outstanding (writing, directing, acting, production design, etc.). I recommend that you stick with it, unless the only thing you love about Sopranos is "gabagoo :DDDD" you're gonna love this too. The first several episodes might be a little tough because Don is such an enigma at first (you don't find out he has a family till the end of the pilot), but they slowly reveal his backstory through the first half of the season (the basics of it, anyway). Also, Roger is a GOATed character and the show is worth watching for him alone.

i enjoy this show and i like peggy olson i guess, but i basically can not stand any part where its just the women or the house wives talking. I started to realize I have this problem with just about every series. For instance in breaking bad I started skipping every part where skyler would talk and then i was surprised at the end when walt is like "where is the money bitch" and skylar was like "omg i gave it away". I have been doing the same thing with this show as well. I'm on season 3 now and I basically watch a hour long episode in 30 minute after I skip when women talk. I tried to tune in for a bit and its basically

also british people are also just as bad so I dont really want to listen to them either. british tv might have been better than our stuff 10-20 years ago with all the british PBS shit because they actually had a grain of wit but now amerishart tv is just better and britcuck tv just doesnt have an answer

He won and lost two trophy wives because he didn't fulfill his part of the bargain, always putting himself first. Betty's childishness is entirely the result of Don's failures as a husband and man.

I'm on a rewatch myself, and this thread is proof the universe revolves around me. Anyway, the show has two major issues that kept it from being on the level of Sopranos:

1. Not leaning into the humor or absurdity.

2. Less peaks in general.

Regarding no. 1, every single time Roger is on screen, for instance, is fucking gold.
>What do women want?
>Who cares? *takes a drink*
Or when he ordains Harry as the head of the television department. Or telling Joan he's the finest piece of ass he ever had when she was expecting a heart to heart. It's not that the show needs more Roger, it's that the show needs the same level of humor from just about every Roger scene, across the majority of the show the same way Sopranos does.
>I'm not in India, what do I give a fuck?

And again, the peaks. I'm on season 3, episode 3, and this thread has definitely brought to mind how Mad Men has nothing like
>Someday, you'll have families of your own
or
>What kind of a chance did she have, with YOU as her mother?
The show fumbles its potential equivalent moments, such as
>You will be shocked how much this didn't happen
but not giving them any deference. They just sorta come and go. Don's (major spoiler if you're working through seasons 1 and 2) brother committing suicide is limited to one fucking episode. One. That's wild. Sopranos' framing device of the therapist actually did it wonders, because it gave the writers excuses for Tony to talk about his feelings on xyz. If Don had been seeing a therapist, we could see how he goes from his pilot mindset of
>I'm living like no tomorrow because there isn't one
to season 2 where he wants to reconcile with Betty.

tl;dr it's an entertaining enough show, anybody who says it's on the level of Sopranos is just wrong and that's a shame. I have a sneaking suspicion it's because Mad Men has a lot of female writers but don't tell your wife I said that.

Mad men had okay moments but it was sorely missing a strong thesis or plotline. It just meanders about. To be honest, everything it had to say was conveyed in the very first season.

It's not the worst thing to watch, all the way through to season 6 or 7 or whatever it was, but it's only a little bit of entertainment value and certainly doesn't deserve to be considered one of the great series of all time.

the greatest limitation of the show is its tethering to the 60s. at the time of sopranos filming, you could film it anywhere because it was contemporary. you can have little character moments that shine like the johnny sack-junior-tony-hesh sitdown in front of satriales because the crew didn't need to make sure every prop and vehicle on set was something from the 60s or looks like something from the 60s. most of mad men's scenes, especially season 1, take place in a home, or at sterling-cooper. you might say that's obvious, but it speaks to the fact that you can't just have don walking down the street with roger having a conversation. every time don and roger have a conversation, the set needs to be well lit, the dialogue needs to matter to the episode's themes, so you have less room for little funny moments which you point out the show lacks. it's amazing mad men went on for 6 more seasons. probably bankrolled by the walking dead ratings.

>Mad men had okay moments
It had some great moments, the finale of season 3, Lane's ending, both of Don's breakdowns, the various mergers. But I know people have different opinions on what makes moments 'great'.
>It just meanders about.
I don't think so, it shakes things up multiple times after s3, not just in setting but character dynamics too. Specifically Don's fall from grace in s6 onwards. Compare that to the Sopranos (becuase it's already been brought up) where it feels like shit doesn't really change dramatically until the final couple of episodes.
>sorely missing a strong thesis or plotline
Overall plotline in my eyes is about the original, small and unique advertising firm trying to maintain independence until the end where it finally gets swallowed up by a larger and mundane corporate giant.
>To be honest, everything it had to say was conveyed in the very first season.
What do you think it was trying to say?
>certainly doesn't deserve to be considered one of the great series of all time.
