Caligari was the contemporary equivalent of Avatar. Impressive visually (for its time) but pretty forgettable otherwise. It's a nice little nostalgia pic but whoever actually put it on this list is a gigapseud.

You're the pseud. Avatar is impressive in special effects, Caligari was impressive because of the visual artistry, the style of sets, the way it manages to conjure up a fever dream aesthetic. It's an expressionist masterpiece, sure it's not "scary" but there's a huge creep factor to that film to this day. Avatar on the other hand is just a Windows screensaver, and even those often have a more memorable aesthetic to them.
Silent era Avatar would be the movies of George Melies which were specifically impressive because of the special effect tricks, although even those movies are more naturally stylish than the generic white noise of Cameron's Avatar.

It's amongst the weaker winners for sure. But like I pointed out, it's almost facetious to call Moonlight a best picture winner. It's an egregious display of rigging. La La Land won.
