Why do people say that this movie is making fun of Christians?

It absolutely isn't, if anything it's making fun of JEWS specifically, it shows them as gullible retards falling easily for anyone who they think is the Messiah. Jesus is just there going along with his ministry, and we don't even focus on him after the scene of the sermon on the mount. No jokes are made at his expense or that of Christians for that matter, he's not depicted as some sort of fraud. All the jokes are made specifically at the expense of JEWS.

Life of Brian depicts how easy it is for some random shlub to get propped up as the messiah purely by happenstance and mob mentality in the same era as Jesus. The movie's premise is pretty much "You remember that jesus guy? Yeah, literally any random dumbass could do exactly what he did with zero effort"

Anyway, that's just playing devils advocate here. I personally don't think the Monty Python team was trying to attack anyone, they just thought it would be funny story if some guy got in over his head

That's the point.
If you have people publicly crucified you have a very real first hand experience that will make you think twice about doing something that could cause you to be sentenced to it. And since it was the punishment for crimes against the state it made people more willing to just go-with-the-flow and embrace your new roman overlords.
