Decades from now people people will only talk about Alien(1979) and Prometheus/Covenant. Humanity will finally accept that it was one of the most signifcant movies ever filmed.

Not that anon, but its Ridley Scott, it is technically a magnificent film, and it was incredible on an audio-visual level in the theaters. It was also one of the few times where I was genuinely impressed by how he managed to utilize 3d. Most directors would just mostly have a flat movie except for the few times shit popped out at the screen, but prometheus used it to show the depth and volume of the sets, you felt like you were inside of the space.
Unfortunately its one of the worst scripts written by 12 people. Scott is a technical director, but if the story is fucking stupid, and the characters aren't baked into it, and the actors aren't trying to elevate the material, you can't count on scott to do it.
And then its got Damon Lindelof's greasy fucking fingers all over the final draft.
I think the WORST thing about prometheus is that Scott had his own headcannon and backstory for the xenomorph since he made the first movie, and it always sounded far more interesting than the shit we got with prometheus.
Go listen to the director commentary track for alien. Get the blu ray box set they released a few years ago, its great, all four movies have the theatrical and a special edition, commentary tracks, and a mountain of behind the scenes and making-of stuff. The extras for alien 3 and its development hell is a far more interesting and educational story than the movie. Its star trek V levels of "its a fucking miracle this got made" which helps sand-down a lot of the flaws.

Alien was just a cunthair from being a B-movie horror that no one remembers. If Aliens hadn't existed, there wouldn't be a franchise, and you wouldn't even have known Alien 1 existed.

Everything great about the franchise is from Aliens. Dropships, pulse rifles, colonial marines, Queens, hives, the whole species. Aliens did the heavy lifting with worldbuilding.

The Alien franchise is just the outer space version of Mad Max. Lackluster first film that people only know because the sequel was so amazing that it spawned a franchise and retroactively made the first palatable.

What I really like about the original 4 alien movies is that they're basically all retelling the same story, but with the thumb print of the director all over it.
Alien is very much a ridley scott movie, amazing set design and attention to detail to make it feel lived in, incredible shots, tight editing.
Aliens is a james cameron movie, its big, slick, full of the coolest shit you'll ever see, with incredible effects to tell a simple straightforward story.
Alien 3 is a david fincher movie, and even if he disowned it, it's unmistakably a dark grungy nasty gross david fincher movie.
And alien Ressurection is jean pierre jeunet being his weird french self, and while the movie really suffers for the Joss Wheedon script, on a technical level its just fucking gorgeous. Most of the sets and scenes were all shot with practical lighting, and when he did bring in lighting its ring lights, before they were a meme, and it creates gorgeous closeups. The film was also developed with a different technique which is why it has those gorgeous deep blacks and dark color. I will die mad they bait-and-switched Michael Wincott as the protagonist and then kill him off first. I love that gravel voiced creep, he's always been a top tier character actor and deserved a leading role in a big franchise entry.

Then again, the xenomorph is such a unique and memorable design, for all you know it would have still been as iconic as it is to this day, even without James Cameron's help.

Alien 4 all I can see is Joss Whedon's influence. Ridley stops being a vulnerable, determined woman. She becomes a literal superhuman because that's how he writes "strong women." And then a plucky band of adventurers who make constant quips that detract from the seriousness of the plot, or make zany poses and shots for comedic effect.

Resurrection might be more Whedon than even Buffy or Firefly was.

But yeah, Joss Whedon offered a public apology the script.
If it wasn't an Alien movie, and just its own weird IP it would have played better, but it is just so tonally out of place against the series as a whole.
I also give it credit for having the best looking xenos of the franchise. They're just so shiny and slimy and wet.
And I can't hate anything that gave Brad Dourif a paycheck and one really good scene where he manages to be creepier and more unsettling than the alien bug monster he shares the scene with.
And of the four original alien movies, I genuinely like and enjoy all of them.

For one, it needs a pay off with the engineers. Leaving it hanging was a gigantic middle finger to the audience especially when it's then not answered in the sequel either. For two, a payoff for the Prometheus name/story. If the guys are the beginning were supposed to be rogues that stole the life creating juice and made humans, which is why these different looking engineers are upset, then spell that out. And finally, disconnect it from being a prequel. That was very idiotic and hamstrung the movie. It forced it to be set on an extremely boring barren world for no reason when it could have been set on a mysterious, spooky, giger planet with anything they wanted.

The "pay off" should be that they don't give a single fuck about the thoughts of the beings they created and they operate on a plane humans can't imagine. With these kinds of god being stories less is more, it should be kept vague and up for speculation/interpretation because anything else just ruins it.

this was kind of the intention i believe, ridley said something along the lines of the engineers' structures and technology looking bleak and cold to humans but them being so advanced and evolved, they see all their own stuff like they're on a higher plane of existence.
prometheus shouldn't have had xenomorphs and was planned to be part 1, with covenant revolving around david and shaw visiting the real engineer planet with giger city design, which was scrapped and changed into the mess covenant was.

I would imagine there not being a civilization of "engineers". Maybe just an enclave or small enclaves. I'm sure a sequel and a planet or planets of the engineers would be not very interesting. Where do you go from there? Xenomorphs fighting engineers while humans somewhat interacting? It's been done and is old and cliche. Could be a little interesting. That or you'd have to kill all of them possiby the way the robot wiped out that planet in covenant. It was incredibly lame if this was the case. Enclave traveling space would make for the best and thought provoking. Maybe they can't have offspring or something.

I am a Prometheus defender. Its a good movie. Its flawed but introduces cool, interesting elements into the Alien universe. The real problem is Covenant because it didnt really continue the plot and mystery of the engineer species and how they created the black goo and xenos.
