Describe post-Kurosawa Japanese cinema in one word.
Obviously not great but there was still plenty of good stuff being made.
He stopped working around 93 but there were still plenty of directors doing quality work for a while:
Hayao Miyazaki
Satoshi Kon
Takashi Miike
Hirokazu Koreeda
Ryusuke Hamaguchi
Yoshiaki Kawajiri
Takeshi Kitano
Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Yoji Yamada
etc
Nowdays their quality movies are very sporadic. You have to look for them - they do exist but you're not going to read about them here, and you aren't going to hear about your co-worker talking about them. pic related.

*i just realised this was more than one word.
Sorry everyone. I have.... failed you
Tragic
Casting agencies have overtaken any semblance of talent and art, and they insist on putting fuccbois everywhere, especially where they don't belong. "Recent" (2016 onwards) movies about Sengoku Judai and even the NHK Drama about Yukimura Sanada had horrendous casting, not to mention the terrible production values. The Koreans at least recognize when to hire rugged middle aged men or fucc bois, Japan just decided to put lanky fucc bois everywhere. Oh and their women can't fucking act for some reason.

Miike's last good film was gozu 22 years ago. Most punk indies can't match Testuo 1989

We're a long way from 70s Yakuza films with actual rugged looking dudes. Hell, even Ichi the Killer still had rugged looking, but one could've seen Matsuda in his prime as a fuccboi.
Although here in 89, how's he look?

Yes I was skeptical about putting Miike on that list because he's so hit 'n' miss, but the thread is about post-kurosawa and Audition fits the bill and is a great movie.

Satoshi Kon wasn't a great director. Such a meme.
