Negan's intro and Glenn's death was the nail in the coffin
It was on and off good/bad to that point, but after the S7 premiere it never recovered and all you need to do is look at the viewership data as proof, it fell off hard and never reached the heights of S5 (which I'd tentatively argue is the best season).

It peaked when Rick and the group were living in the forest going full savage and murdering everyone on sight. It was still good the first few episodes they were in Alexandria, but it quickly went full retard

When they dragged the first 6 issues of the comics into a 5 hour long season.

Alexandria was mostly gay except for Rick occasionally acting feral. Negan's intro was the peak after early S5 stuff with it all downhill from there because while Negan is very cool, he's too oppressive a force, they can't really do anything with anyone that's interesting. The viewer falloff that happened directly correlated with Negan is because viewers are giant pussies who couldn't handle the violence and a Korean fag getting his head bashed. It literally made normalfags cry.
