The first half (until De Niro sticks his thumb in Lewis mouth) has marvelous entertaining cinematography. The photography and editing is among the most unique I've seen, they used every single trick in the book; dolly-zoom, forced perspectives, dutch angles, bird's eye, pov, split dioptic, flash-cuts, dissolve, wiping and many more. I loved it. A great setup.
Then it kinda went away. The story, the characters, the photography, everything. It somehow got flanderized. A dumb slasher/stalker movie. Lack of ideas. Lack of engagement. No energy left. No more battle of wits, merely a casual struggle, a loser david battling a goliath toying with him. If De Niro had won at the end, I'd forgive them all, but as it ended it was just a pure waste.
