I only watched this show ones. It's too depressing to me.

I've never watched this show but I did have vivid fantasies of being part of the Strike Team from The Shield and cherished all the moments they hanged in the club house and had fun. Which is why the ending ripped my fucking heart out. I've never been able to rewatch the show since. Too heartbreaking.

I live vicariously through the main character of pretty much every show I watch

there was an episode of Torchwood (Doctor Who spin-off, Welsh team fights aliens or summat) where a bloke just turns up and does some mind control shenanigans, as if he's always been part of the group.

i don't have any interesting stories to share, but you could totally just get away with infiltrating some social circle by pretending you fit in. e.g. have wandered into an anime convention for free and (i think) they assumed i was staff. just walked in.

This is why I slightly prefer the wire over the sopranos by a cunthair. Sopranos charecters have a lot of depth, but not as large of a moral grey area.

I find the same is true for The Wire though. Sure it's more sympathetic and makes you feel for some of the gangbangers and crooked cops. But no one really deserves better than they got, and many deserved worse. I think the only "good" character is Lester, who did get a good ending.
However, others also got good endings even though they were awful people who did awful things. That's part of the depressive theme it shares with both The Sopranos and The Shield - the world's not fair, it crushes idealistic hopes and dreams, then simply moves on without a second thought.
