The Alien franchise is like Rocky and Rambo. There is one good movie that came out 40 years ago. It doesn't even really make sense that there is a franchise at all. It's not as though Alien has some sort of amazing premise. It's just 'what if there was a spooky alien on board and it killed everyone.' Alien is great because of the visual direction, the atmosphere, the incredible set design, the naturalistic acting and dialogue, and the way it all comes together. All of the sequels and prequels don't have any of that. They just have the premise - 'what if there was an ayylmao.'

>make a movie
>its successfull
>make a sequel because thats basically guaranteed money
>make a third movie because the sequel was okay and people want more
>make a shitty fourth movie that nobody asked for
>make a remake of the first movie but with races swapped
>make a reboot movie
etc. and then they keep doing this until it makes no moneys anymore.
a tried and tested formula is easy cash while a new movie is always a big risk.

The problem with the franchise is that they keep thinking it's about the xenomorphs, so they keep making the movies about increasingly elaborate xenomorph life cycles and history and so on. That's not why Alien is good, though. The xenomorph, really, isn't even much of a threat. It was dangerous in the first movie because it was fighting against barely-armed, untrained space truckers and then in the second movie because the company sent like seven soldiers lol. Any proper military force would easily destroy hundreds of thousands of the fuckers. The xenomorph is cool but it's not a viable enough threat to build a franchise around. They are never even shown knowing how to use technology even though in O'Bannon's original concept they did, the one on the Nostromo was just a juvenile that knew nothing about their culture. The reason why Alien works is because of the cosmic horror and isolation of deep space, combined with the fact that your very employers consider you expendable and are willing to kill you for profit. It's that combined cosmic spookiness and social isolation of being oppressed by inhuman political/corporate systems thing. The xenomorph is really cool, but it's not the main reason why the movie is great.

What the actual fuck is wrong with you? If the comics are great, then why aren't you recommending people read them? What kind of crippling mental illness and severe retardation would possess someone to ever watch recaps, let alone recommending them?

Erm akshually... this is true however I do think the xeno in Alien is smart enough to understand technology. It seems to know that the ship is self destructing and so it hides in the escape pod. Then it seems to understand that only Ripley can pilot the escape pod, and so it waits until she takes off before it tries to rapekill her.

Yep. Every film after Alien is missing the ancient cosmic horror aspect. Promotheus dipped its toes in a little bit, but ruined it by making the Engineers characters, and making all scenes on the derelict goofy. And by resizing the engineers to human sized.

Finding an ancient crashed spaceship on an uninhabitable space rock, piloted by a fossilized giant elphant man with a big hole in his chest is horror enough. The xeno was honestly superflous after that.

I've read almost all the Dark Horse stuff and it's all edgeslop. Cringe shit like a nun looking into the face of a Xeno and when she looks into the empty sockets beneath its dome she realizes that there's no God and then it claws her eyes out or some shit, or some guy getting captured by the Xenos and being force fed pieces of his dying mother before the Xenos try to get him to fuck and impregnate her. Pure slop.

Accutate. Ultimately, the franchise's refusal to resolve, or even acknowledge, the bonus situation, is what doomed it. And I mean that Unironically.

Why did Ripley go back the LV1234 in Aliens? - the bonus situation. She was found liable for the destruction of a space freighter worth like, 17 Trillion dollars. She was going to be loading space docks for the company for eternity to pay off her debts. Why did the mission in Aliens go tits up? - The bonus situation. Pic related sold out his fellow humans for a percentage point. Sad!

Subsequent alien movies had no bonus situation to speak of, and are considered weak installments. Is that such a coincidence?

I agree there was no need for sequels, but Alien is clearly more than just an alien killing people. So much more. There's the monster that lies dormant for thousands of years, just like the dragon or the leviathan from mythology. There's the wonder of exploring alien worlds and it turns into horror. There's the vast sterile emptiness and deadness of space that isn't so empty and dead anymore when the alien shows up. Also instead of endless space the crew is suddenly crammed together in closely confined spaces when they search the air ducts for the thing, or try to flee in the shuttle. There's the parasite that lives in you and feeds on you until it bursts out of your chest. There's mother and the android ganging up on the crew to bring the alien back to earth. There's the question of how much of a sacrifice is studying that "perfect organism" is really worth it. And all in all it's another battle of good vs evil.

That's just the story level. A lot of effort also went into the design of the alien and the production design of the movie. Plus it's well made. Apart from the scenes where they smoke(!) on board of a space ship, you don't really get reminded often that this is a 46 year old movie.

Alien was fun because it was a spooky slasher. Aliens was fun because it was a cool action movie. But then the series went super up its own ass and began having bigger ideas and everything fell apart. People who pretend there is social commentary in the first two are just trying to sound smart because they're ashamed of liking a mindless action movie

I honestly agree, while the Space Jockey scenes are incredible nothing is explained in the original film, for all we know the alien was art of an otherwise routine cargo. We never learn anything about engineers or any of that shit, it's just a dead alien with another alien.

They also overestimated how important Ripley is as a character and kept Weaver around as the face of the franchise for too long. At least that problem was eventually solved by the actress aging out of the role.
