Their blood and claws are kinda negated if you keep them at a distance on a planet with a breathable atmosphere and just puke bullets and fire at them.
I unironically believe that if Ripley and crew had just stayed outside of the building in the bigass field after the ship crashed, set up the sentry guns, sent Bishop back in to pilot the second dropship down, that more people would have been alive at the end.
Can't sneak up on them for 200 yards in every direction, sentry guns assfuck mass attacks, and you can freely use the grenade launchers on groups.
It's not a plothole, they just didn't know this.

Because they were told not to use their pulse rifles in the reactor and that's why they didn't annihilate the whole hive. Did you faggots pay attention or what? Cameron nerfed the xenos and turned them into bugs and used plot contrivances to kill the marines. Fuck all you faggots

No, she was a Flight Warrant Officer first.
A Captain would be a step down.
Warrant Officers are different than enlisted or officer.
She started out as a Flight Warrant.
That's fucking hard.
Warrant Officers learn both the officer and enlisted side of information and skill.
By the time you reach WO3, you can tell majors and most colonels to fuck off.
WO4 and WO5 usually only answer to generals.
None of them answer to, or are affected by any enlisted ranks.
Weyland Yutani took Ripley's contract back for the second LV426 mission, but demoted her to being an officer at the lowest rank after Alien.
A lot of people miss that part.
She outranked Gorman, but was there as an advisor, not in their chain of command.
It's why Apone and Hicks were laughing when she proved to be competent with a loader.
They knew she had been demoted, but she still wanted to help and was competent.
Warrant officers and regular officers don't usually help the enlisted with physical labor.
Especially warrant officers. You almost never see them anywhere except behind a desk or in a helicopter.

I like both Alien and Aliens.
Prefer Alien.
But the tension between these two movies is an annoying dilemma.
It's like Alien sets up this wonderful sandcastle, all this beautiful imagery, the characters, world, the Giger artistry, the underappreciated Ron Cobb futurism of the Nostromo sets, and Ridley's framing of it all in his his dream-like style - and then Aliens is all the fun of stomping on that sandcastle. Smashing it around with a shovel called the Pulse Rifle.
There is a real enjoyment in Aliens, but it creates less and adds less. And as fun as it was it arguably left the "Alien series" in a bad way.

I'm not sure I'd call it tone deaf as much as a calculated reversal of the original movie's tone.
From what I can gather this is what FOX wanted, due to audience complaints about Alien being completely terrifying.
It's definitely deliberately meant to undo a lot of the horror Ridley set up.
Might have been the best move for FOX at the time given audiences feelings at the time ... but we're several generations out from Alien and people are definitely more acclimated to the kind of horror it offers.

Personally I just wish we could move on from having a single sci-fi monster dominating the sci-fi horror genre since the 80's.
There's like a handful of others, Predator, The Thing, etc.
In the 50's and 60's you had movie monsters and strange sci-fi tales seemingly by the dozens every year.

actually, mystery is part of cosmic horror.
in fact, the moment stuff starts being rationalized, it stops being cosmic horror.
only the space jockey belong to that category, though.
the xeno creature, it's just an alien creature with a weird lifecycle. it's mostly monster/slasher horror.
plus ridley scott explained the space jockey, so that's no longer cosmic horror too.

Nope. They are in a weird position, but way wrong.
If a 2LT decides to berate a CSM, the CSM has to take it.
It's a terrible idea, and career suicide for the 2LT, but legally is allowed.
Warrants are different in the fact that they can just tell the LT to fuck off with their stupidity and face no consequences. Same goes for enlisted.
But.
Warrant officers are tied to equipment, not leading soldiers.
They aren't out there to fight, lead soldiers or give orders. Except for where equipment is concerned. Some are fully capable of it, but their primary concern is with safety and seviceability of the equipment they are assigned to.
Remember Ripley bitching at Parker and Brett about the repairs on the Nostromo?
She knew they were fucking around.

I like Aliens a lot.
But as a 00's kid, in my eyes Aliens really just paved the way for the Halo games - which is like everything cool about Aliens, combined with Robo Cop, Predator, The Thing, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, etc. etc.
Halo is a lot more "additive" than Aliens. Creates its own new universe instead of adding big guns to an already existing one.

I think I simply find Aliens fans immature.
It's all power scaling conversations like you get from children reading comic books. Even the way they talk about Alien as a film vs. Aliens as a film it's power scaling "Aliens is betterer because it's scarier when the facehugger crawled around like a spider and the xenos are actually a threat because they kill a bunch of marines who are biggerer and betterer than mere civvies - unlike Alien with its silly rape subtext and un-scary mystery that isn't even real cosmic horror"
this fucking franchise.

more like purist alien fans are immature.
you are the faggots denying aliens' existence because apparently xenos shouldn't die to bullets.
they're different genres, but in terms of franchise, aliens is the more important one.
you can argue about the first alien's cultural impact to sci-fi movies.
and yes, the xeno creature alone is not cosmic horror. it's only in the context of "it came from an unknown ship full of alien eggs with a giant pilot fossil".
it's not far-fetched that somewhere out there, there's a hostile organism like a xeno.
after all, earth's own animal kingdom has its own wtf moments more absurd than the xeno's lifecycle with more devious "subtext" than rape.

The book was written at the same time that the movie was being filmed.
Foster was denied access to seeing the actual alien to prevent leaks, so he was general in his descriptions.
Several scenes were cut from the movie after test screenings, yet still appear in the book, as Foster was working from what was filmed, not what later appeared after the cuts.

But the point is that in Alien there's only one xeno that has to hide in vents because he's out of his element and outnumbered.
In Aliens there's ton of them, their hive if being threatened and they swarm the marines. That doesn't make them stupid, it's just a different scenario.

They probably figured they got everyone in the colony buildings, which is how Newt survived for so long after the initial outbreak, she probably wasn't having to actually evade anything for a while before the marines got there.

Eh they were probably still sending a few to sweep the colony, evidenced by the fact there was still at least one more colonist left with a Xeno ready to burst by the time the marines went into the hive.
Both movies go with the impregnation to chestbursting turn around time being about 24 hours. The other movies played a lil more fast and loose with the gestation period but the first two stick to this.

I'm quite comfortable shitposting on here and later we're going for a few drinks and dinner.

What part of
>He wrote what he was directed to write and published it with their blessing and input before the movie released.
>The people in charge made last minute cuts from the film based off of test screenings.
What part of that is confusing to you?
Foster didn't change anything.
There are simply parts of the book that went into print before the movie released that were cut from the movie.
It's not some magical retcon. Nothing changes. I'm sure the scene where the Alien is fascinated by a blinking light and staring at it is important to the story. Yet, it does not appear in the movie, and was cut from it. That does not change the fact that originally, it did happen, but was cut from the release movie for whatever reason.
It was still filmed. It was still included in the book because it was part of the film before test audiences bitched about wondering why the alien was staring at a green flashing light.
The book was written side by side with the filming, and approved by the people making the movie.
Why is this a difficult concept for you zoomers to understand?
Do you need a tiktok video on 2X speed to understand what I am saying?

Flamethrower was a guess that most creatures and humans don't like to be burned.
Taser stick was a guess that most creatures don't like half a million volts pumped into them.
Neither of those guesses involved punching multiple holes into a creature that bleeds acid.
They even came up with nets to trap it.
They had handheld laser weapons. Lasers still poke holes.

>Cameron was young. He had just directed Terminator. Cameron had called a meeting to discuss his โ€œnext project.โ€ Everyone knew Cameron had written a treatment for Alien 2 that nobody would touch because Alien was not a massive financial success. Alien 2 was not on the table. We expected a professional pitch from Cameron, an outline and a treatment of what he had in mind with a cursory budget; perhaps a couple assistants to run a slide show. Instead Cameron walked in the room without so much as a piece of paper. He went to the chalk board in the room and simply wrote the word ALIEN. Then he added an โ€˜Sโ€™ to make ALIENS. Dramatically, he drew two vertical lines through the โ€˜Sโ€™, ALIEN$. He turned around and grinned. We greenlit the project that day for $18 million.

Honestly I don't think the rifle was that OP, if you watch Aliens you see that xenos are easily killed by the pulse rifles, because they fire explosive 10mm rounds, while in Romulus the rifle has 450 round capacity, but we see rounds bouncing right off xenomorph carapaces and taking about 10-20 shots to the head to kill them. I think there's even a bit where a shot doesn't puncture a TV screen

net positive is an understatement. it's pretty much the reason why we're still bitching about the franchise today.
without it, we probably wouldn't have prometheus and covenant to bitch about, no alien romulus and earth to keep whining on.
my favorite comparison is the thing 1982. everyone loves the first film now. a classic. top 10 movie in x list.

>he franchise also produced multiple media that's closer to the original.
There actually isn't a single piece of Alien sequel or prequel media that does what I really like about the first film.
The first like hour of quiet exploration, adults dealing with a strange threat and their interpersonal drama, the good 10-20 minutes of Kane comatose with a facehugger attached to his face while the increasingly scared crew debate what to do about it...
Closest you kinda get is Prometheus, and its first hour of buildup to the chaos, but there's nothing quite like the crew dealing with Kane being facehugged
I don't give a fuck about "canon", I'm interested in what these movies (and I guess games and comics) do for me.
The "Alien franchise" has offended my tastes more than it's been good.

sorry, but it's unlikely to find what you're looking for in this franchise.
the first alien film is about buildup and reveals:
the reveal of the space jockey. the reveal of the facehugger. of the chestburster. of the grown xeno.
like i said in another thread: you cannot be surprised by the xeno lifecycle twice.
you're better off finding new ip.

Really it's the atmosphere. If it is breathable, humans will kill you to the last.
If it's not breathable, but mineral rich, the humans will plop down a terraformer and make the air breathable, and we're back to square one.

It's just as interesting every time I see it again.

I hate this "franchise" built up around this movie.

I think his point is that, because the xenos are imaginary creatures, whose capabilities (after the first film anyway) were only limited by the imagination, the writer of a sequel COULD have made the xenos more scary instead of less.
Like, say, if you shoot a xeno and it explodes into bits, eats of its individual body parts could regenerate into another xeno, like a starfish or a lizard regenerating its tail.
Or maybe you could have had them be sapient, able to speak and communicate, and have some truly alien things to say.

Aliens are sneaky and can only fight in close combat.
If I know that you are an armored acid bleeding alien, then you lose, because I am coming with full auto weapons.
Your only chance is to attack unsuspecting, ill armed people.
Which just ends up summoning better armed people.
You don't have guns, or even slingshots.
Bite or slash, and all you are doing is delaying the bullet.
Even as fast as Aliens breed, humans will still win.

that's the thing. what you want, you will never find in any sequel, just by the virtue of audience expectations (they already know the lifecycle, so no point in having an hour of buildup similar to alien).
you need to find good standalone (or part 1) movies, where there's an emphasis on the unknown.
maybe try something like

Xenos being able to regenerate into more xenos from bits of their body parts would have instantly made them a scarier threat against pulse rifles.
Every xeno you blast becomes 5 or 6 more in a matter of hours.
You could even have made the movie about, instead of a huge hive, only one xeno initially that the marines blast, which eventually becomes hundreds after several hours of fighting.

Aliens maintains the sci-fi horror genre of the original movie it's just that it also adds a third genre like Predator. Alien fans just forget that the xenomorph was never this invincible "perfect organism" that couldn't be harmed with normal weapons the first movie shows this quite clearly. It might be the most effective and deadliest predator in the known universe but it's not a demigod it's still just an animal.

Humans are at the top of the food chain in the real world not because we're the strongest because we aren't but because we're intelligent enough to be able to make weapons that evens the odds. Without weapons nothing is more dangerous than the xenomorph as Alien shows us.

I think the reason I'm bitching is Disney won't let this thing die.
I would much rather Alien be this thing that I can remember as a good movie and take off my shelf to watch maybe once every 2-3 years whenever I'm in the mood for it instead of DIsney forcing it to stay a part of the cultural conversation well past its due date.
Maybe it'd be different if I had any faith that any new Alien movie would be good.
But man, if you told anyone in the 70's that family friendly princess movie-making Walt Disney Studios was going to be making Alien sequels they would have rightfully laughed their asses off.

Yes.
I am painfully aware of how popular the Alien was and still is.

They did, but handicapped themselves because they didn't want to damage their multibillion dollar ship and get saddle with the bill plus lose their bonus. If they knew what was going to happen, they'd have jumped right to shooting or hop in the lifepods

Nope. They thought it was as easy as have one last meal, go into freezer, kane is still infected but no big deal, they'll all be scanned and quarantined for a few weeks when they get back, everything will turn out ok. Even Ash thought they were just gonna have a little alien snake parasite to study and that was it

Ash is connected to the entire database that has existed. The death of the crew is his fault.

>Explain how the creature from Alien would defeat a team of armed space marines
When Aliens was in production, that answer was a wide open mystery. Of course after Aliens was released for public consumption, the answer is extremely dull

Give some examples of the Marines acting retarded in Aliens.

They were all pretty much bad asses that did everything they could to survive. Which in turn made the Aliens come off as incredibly dangerous when they started taking those Marines out one after another until they were all dead. Which in turn made Ripley into a bad ass for being able to survive the ordeal.

I like the theory that the xenomorph in alien was a soldier while the xenomorphs in aliens were workers which explains why they try and capture victims for the eggs the queen is laying.

Wasn't the whole appeal of the first movie is how it's a bunch of unarmed citizens with nothing but tools unable to properly fight back against something that could melt through their ship if they killed it?

The first xeno encounter basically makes all the marines shit their pants in fear, need to rely on automatic security systems, while every time they face them someone dies.
I'm so tired of the Alien and Aliens rhetoric at this point. What's next? Gonna tell me Die Hard is a Christmas movie?

The xeno in Alien 1 was kind of a little bitch. It lost to 6 people armed with nothing but a glorified blowtorch, one of whom was a on it's side.
