When did Paul W.S. Anderson become a hated director? What was the tipping point? Was it ever based on anything specifically, or was it more of a Michael Bay thing? (Bay became a polarizing figure after Transformers.)

He was never a critical darling. The Resident Evil movies being rejected by both critics and fans pretty much cemented him as a hack in the public eye.

But the RE movies had a lot of fans. That's the only thing that can explain them making over a BILLION dollars, which is just nuts for a zombie film series.

Anderson writes characters kinda stiffly, and he made a fun action movie instead of a horror movie. It's an immensely entertaining film that nerds didn't understand.
Amusing thing is Predator Badlands is very likely going to be PG-13, and you just watch people suddenly be okay with that.

I read the original AVP comic, which the entire franchise is based on, and it's 90% action. If you went into a movie based on that premise, and expected horror, then that's on you. Nerds are the only ones who should have understood it.

Thing is, a lot of people never read the original comic. Their idea of what AvP should be was basically Aliens.

True. Critics had a lot of problems with these movies because they're unapologetically aimed at normie teenage boys. They don't believe that demo should have entertainment aimed at them. Period. Together with source material autists they're very succesful at poisoning the well, to make it seem universally disliked. As OP correctly points out there are parallels to Bay but also Snyder and even George Lucas.

critics and gamers aren't the public eye, if the public didn't want to see the resident evil movies they wouldn't have made like a dozen of them

In nerd circles, hatred for Anderson's films started with Resident Evil. The hatred started before he had even made the film, when they found out the movie had no characters from the games in it. This then led into hatred for his Alien vs. Predator adaptation. And from there, all bets were off. It's exceedingly similar to nerds hating Zack Snyder once he started adapting DC comic stuff. It's very similar to nerds hating George Lucas once he started making the Prequels. The second trilogy of RE movies follows a similar pattern of the OG director returning, a big focus on greenscreen over practical sets, and just generally not seeming to give a shit about older fans disliking the change in direction.
Death Race was aimed at a different demographic, so you really didn't see car movie buffs giving a shit what nerds thought. Death Race wasn't a box office success, but it gained a well liked following, and the car is very recognizable and it arguably has a pretty strong impact on later movies like Fury Road with its fast editing style and really kinetic vehicular combat.
I personally think that outside of nerd circles, Paul's problem really started with Pompeii. Pompeii is a film that should have been a success, and it's really just not very good despite a powerful ending. Reputationally, Paul feels at his lowest now. Monster Hunter has some fans, but it wasn't a success, and his most recent film was interesting, some really nice imagery, but it's a fucking mess and it bombed at the box office.
So now Paul is relying on his next movie, The House of the Dead, to salvage his career and reputation. He has said that it's going to be a real horror film like Event Horizon. Who knows if he'll deliver.

It started with Soldier. Nerds hating on it because it was written by the same people behind Blade Runner.

I've read the director, who's apparently a big fan of the games, is doing the same thing with the reboot RE film. Because their stories have already been told in the games. I'll reserve judgement until I at least see a trailer I suppose,

Soldier is a weird movie because it's seen as a cult classic now, but people hated it so fucking movie in 1998. I remember Jason Isaacs being really irate at one online publication that attacked the film, saying that Paul did a wonderful job under extremely difficult conditions and he was proud of the film. You are right, though. Soldier bombed so hard it didn't get a theatrical release in most countries. They pulled it from theatres. Insane levels of bomb. But now, it's often cited as one of Kurt Russell's stronger acting performances, and an underrated gem.

The Resident Evil reboot is somewhat different from the older movies in that it's way more horror focused. But yea, it is doing mostly the same thing as the old films did. There's some leaks floating around saying that it has very little in common with the games story-wise, the references are pretty throwaway and it's basically just a horror movie with RE branding to get more funding. I think it'll be the kind of film that reviews well. Weapons reviewed super well, and a lot of people like it.

I mean how hard can it be to make a grounded, horror-focused film set in a large mansion, while using a couple of RE characters and ending in a laboratory. It doesn't of course have to be exactly like the games, with finding keys and solving puzzles and shit.
