German nazis sometimes use it as a surrogate flag, and there are Brazilians who LARP as confederates (Confederados) at festivals. It has weirdly global usage.

that's because they're literally descended from confederate soldiers who fled after the civil war

the show was about the south, not hating niggers
i grew up in the south and mainly saw the confederate flag as a southern pride thing
it wasn't until i was much older that it felt like it was strongly connected with racism, and then as a knee-jerk response by people that flew it, it now only seems to be associated with racism
maybe i was naive as a kid, but that's how i view it growing up, and i don't think i was alone
i'll add that i went to D*** as a grad. there was a controversy at the chapel after someone defaced one of the 6 statuettes set in the entrance arch. the statuettes were mainly highly significant religious figures (i can't remember who), but the one defaced was... Robert E. Lee. make of that what you will. the statuette was removed and an empty pedestal is all that remains to this day.
moreover, the campus was designed by a black architect named Julian Abele (who "borrowed" the design from Princeton)
