The LOTR trilogy are terribly overrated movies. It is pretty much just a capeshit spectacle. All the movies have awful dialogue and everything is so damn cheesy. I really do not understand how people can stomach this Hollywood trash. The acting is over the top, the CGI hasn't aged well and the tone is very corny. The production values are decent, but that doesn't make a movie good.

These movies are NOT good movies, let alone masterpieces. It is just pure entertainment sloppa for the masses to eat up.

On the one hand, yes, you're absolutely right.
They're kinda trashy movies for the mass market. Higher production values than similar modern stuff, but proto-capeshit all the same.
On the other hand, for the people who've read (and enjoyed) the novels, they're not horrible adaptations. Actually somewhat enjoyable as companion pieces to the novels - they leave out *a lot* from the books, but while you're watching the films you can fill in the gaps between certain scenes with your knowledge of what happens in the full story, and then at some points it *is* fun to see the operatic spectacle of big scenes in the novels as the movies interpret them (at other points you have stuff like Legolas surfing down a flight of stairs on an Orc shield bullseye-ing two orcs at once - which is ... creative embellishment).

So it's a movie trilogy that holds both mass market appeal and appeal for fans of the novels. For some reason I think the novels actually became very popular in the USA before the movies - might have been people reappraising them in the wake of Harry Potter.

That said, I tried to rewatch them a few years ago, and I couldn't even get through the third one. Unwatchable CGI mess.

I'm a fan of the films, but more of a fan of the books. Fellowship of the Ring is an excellent adaption overall and is mostly the book with everything from the The Old Forest, Tom Bombadil and the Barrow Wights removed. That said, Two Towers and Return of the King, while great movies on their own differ greatly from the books. It was like Jackson kind of blew his load making that spectacular first movie and then made some pretty good ones to follow it but they weren't as good as Fellowship. He portrayed Frodo and Sam as a gay couple intentionally and really threw that on thick at the end of the third movie which pissed me off. He portrayed Aragorn as a reluctant hero that he wasn't, he really changed the character of Faramir. He changed the Red Arrow to the beacons of Gondor for some reason. He had this weird thing with Arwen where she gives up her immortality based on a necklace that doesn't even exist in the books, when he could have just explained she was made human because of her half elven bloodline. Also no Glorfindel but plenty of time for Haldir. There was a whole side quest where Aragorn is seperated from Legolas and Gimli because of the Wargs. Just weird shit like that.

You're right. The films are carried by their soundtracks. The music is unironically some of the most moving and well-crafted work ever created by humans across all mediums, period. If it weren't for the soundtracks, these movies would be a blip that came and went like any other 2000s fantasy romp. Somehow they lucked out and got scores that are on par with the best symphonies ever composed. Music does a lot of subtle, subconscious tricks on the human mind and it tricked the audience into regarding these movies as pure gold. Normies can't actually recall a single fucking plot point from these films yet all agree they are some sort of divinely channeled work. In truth the normies are just remembering the deep primal emotional resonance that the music evoked.

Unironically this. It makes me feel so uncomfortable to not see one single POC in the entire cast. It’s disgusting and they haven’t aged at all. I’m not even a leftist tranny or a brown person at all. Quite the contrary, I’m a white male and conservative and I still feel that these movies are just idk too white washed and kind of corny. The books were pretty good however, so I think it would be nice to get a remake of the movies with a cast and effects that really showcase today’s landscape much clearer. They’re over 20 years old at this point anyhow.

Anyone who ever watched the other attempts by Hollywood at a fantasy epic, especially the ones throughout the 80s, LOTR was the best of them all by miles and miles. It's likely to end that way too, the best we are ever going to get of a sword and sorcery fantasy film.

For some reason no one else in Hollywood is capable of adapting DnD styled high fantasy to film after 40+ years of trying. Everything else is either incredibly shit, or at best marginally watchable or entertaining for how incredibly shit it is.

I think the Hobbit films have taken some of the shine off of LOTR. In his Hobbit trilogy, Jackson places all his worst tendencies and excesses front and centre for much of the running time, demanding that his larks and stunts be noticed regardless of our disinterest. The effect has been that the average viewer has become more alert to the existence of similar defects in the LOTR films, especially in the third one.

Jackson's faults show up to a lesser degree in LOTR, where they're still in an embryonic form, but a viewer who has had his patience drained by The Hobbit will come to LOTR with a frayed temper and an unforgiving attitude towards scenes like Legalos skateboarding down the stairs. The Hobbit has convinced that viewer that Jackson is a fucking buffoon, the good will has been burned away like Smeagol in the lake of fire, and now he watches LOTR with an adversely withering eye.

Just remove
>90% of the barrel river stuff
>All of the Necromancer stuff
>Every scene with Saruman and Galadriel
>Everything with the Dwarves running from Smaug, really just the entire last 50 minutes of Desolation, all of it
>Every single scene involving Alfrid, drop the character completely
>Every scene with Legolas and Tauriel after leaving Mirkwood, none of their Laketown shit
>90% of the third movie

It would still be about 4 hours long since most of the first movie is good enough to keep, about an hour or so of the second and maybe 30 minutes of the third.
