Ever been a bigger, harder fumble before or since? I can't think of one.

GOT at least had a slow descent. This went from an easy addition to the HBO Hall of Fame S1, to "wait they made more?" by S2.

And this might shock many of you, but they actually made another 2 seasons even after that.

The nice thing about season 1 is that it basically tells its own complete story so you can just end with it and pretend it's a miniseries.

Season 1 had a fun premise. Season 2 was just The Adventures of Invincible Blonde Girlboss and Invincible Black Girlboss, which was immediately boring because SPOILER ALERT no one can get invested in characters if the writers are too afraid to give them setbacks.

There's an extremely bizarre mind virus in Hollywood that makes writers believe they can't show women or nonwhites having setbacks because "they need role models" so the scenarios invariably devolve into watching the invincible girlboss punch her way through what's become a tutorial stage.

Battlestar Galactica careens off of a cliff too, but it didn't waste as much talent as Westworld did.

The show just seemed split on what it wanted to do. Season 2 delivers a ton of development to William only to neglect the character almost entirely for the third season. Why? What the fuck was the point of Bernard after the first season? Even Dolores is all over the place, and not in a thoughtful way. I don't mind the show leaving the park, but the balance it found between its mystery and using the park as a satire vehicle in the first season was the most cohesive the show ever got and it felt aimless once it left.

It's the single best episode in the show. The season as a whole just meanders, though I suspect people would look back on it with a little more warmth if the show didn't entirely shit the bed with the third season. Even when it was airing the second season wasn't loved, though.

It was fumbled as a series, but at least you can just watch Season 1 and assume it's a single series. It works perfectly fine standalone.

It's to the point when people say they watched Season 2, i'm genuinely curious as to why they did - what exactly interests you past this point?
A completely different setting would be nice perhaps, but the moment they show you the same characters again i'm already out.

try rewatching first two seasons without grifters in your ear. There's no "le massive drop in quality" between them. And because of the ending, i would say S2 is even slightly better. There's this online phenomenon where all it takes sometimes is literally one reddit post(this is what happened here), or one yt video and then suddenly half of the internet will mindlessly repeat some stupid bullshit. I understand people having similar opinions about something but if they all use the same specific wording, they are mindless npcs and i have nothing but contempt for them. Seriously, try rewatching them. Even here, live opinions about s2 were mostly positive. But then hivemind took over. If you could ask them then they would probably say it went from 9/10 to 8/10. But now they will say it went from 10/10 best show ever to 1/10 worst show ever simply because they don't even remember what they felt watching those episodes. They replaced the memory of that experience with what the internet told them to think about it. Just rewatch them. But i know you won't because you're scared i'm right and you don't wanna find out you were npc idiot. The cognitive dissonance would melt your brains

I think you are actually victim of what you were trying to disprove, because you've watched S2 with beforehand knowledge of people not liking it. Now, I am not calling you a contrarian, not even like in subconscious level, I just think because you were so eager to give season 2 a fair honest shot that you ended up being more magnanimous than the season deserves.

There's also the other aspect, I don't think it's entirely fair to judge the series out of the context of the hype/wait time between seasons (that's why they are seasons). For example, when I was binging Walking Dead (don't ask, I had depression) I really didn't think Glenn's death was that bad, but when you take into account a year of wait between season 6's finality and season 7's start, yeah, I'd be pissed too.

I watched it without much "internet opinion" reaching me when I first watched it.
I thought S02 was fine. S01 was better written (as shows usually are, that is just how productions work), but in S02 you are shown the aftermath and then unravel what else is happening bit by bit and there are interesting set pieces. (The Shogun land raid was fantastic.)
S03 was disappointing. for one, they changed the show completely. It was no longer about the park, but about a future dystopia with lifelike robots. I was pumped when I saw the trailer and Thomas Flanagan coming on, but they just did not manage to create a world I cared about. S04 was more of the same, their pseudo intellectual ramblings showed even more, where in S1 and S2 they were at least good enough to not pop up negatively within the show.
But I do agree with your base statement that people are easily primed one way or the other to watch a show with the wrong mindset and then be quite harsh on it. my go to example there is True Detective.

The same phenomenon is what caused Super Castlevania IV to go from being a beloved masterpiece, to being "that poorly designed too easy CV" thanks to one YouTube video, to now enough time having passed that you have zoomers questioning why it is so hated, when the reality was that it used to be one of the most beloved games of all time (and probably still is, once you leave the realm of internet discourse and deal with people who actually played the game, especially when it was relatively recent)

>Ever been a bigger, harder fumble before or since?

They stupidly launched the robot uprising in the first season, leaving nothing but meaningless mumbo-jumbo dialog while recycling the same sets over and over again.

If I had been in charge:

S01 - Westworld - William falls in love with a robot chick while Man In Black does evil shit, we don't know they're the same guy at different times, final episode is the start of robot uprising

S02 - British Rajworld - chick hunts tigers, gets involved in the Great Game, etc. final episode is the start of robot uprising

S03 - Samuraiworld - young guy and older master swordsman have adventures, turns out the young guy is a robot and kills human master, final episode is the start of robot uprising

S04 - Romanworld - gladiator escapes to save a slave girl, the chick is human and the gladiator a robot, final episode is the start of robot uprising

S05 - Medievalworld - fucking peasant wenches and having jousts, final episode is the start of robot uprising

S06 - Set in all the parks simultaneously - The robot uprising happens, robots chimpout, humans flee and/or get killed, a few make it to escape pods, (along with a couple of robots) turns out the robot theme park is a hollowed out asteroid which the robots launch into deep space and escape humans.

The End

The parks were the most interesting part, with the future world outside of them probably being best left as a mystery. That's not to say they're could never show it, or maybe even just cap off the series there, but shit got boring fast when the majority of it was set outside of the park, and was largely just a generic dangerous rebel robot in the not too distant future plot.

Are you sure, though?

A robot rising from the least advantageous position and exploiting her nature as a robot to break the system is classic pulpy stuff.
In the end, she also doesn't "save the world", she chooses to give up her freedom to find her daughter despite the fact she knows it's all fake. To her, it's real enough and she can find purpose in that instead of being same saviour as programmed by some lofty asshole. She chooses to go back to her role as a mother, over being le epic hero, because she'd rather chose something fake than have reality chosen for her. That is how the first season ends her character arc.

Maybe you just watched the shittier later seasons and this coloured your perception of the character, which is where she does absolutely become an insufferable mary sue and her entire character is ruined.

Heroes is always the first show I think of when it comes to fumbling later seasons.
First season is really good. Apparently they had planned to have the next season focus on other characters, which could work really well. Let's introduce some new blood with new powers, and occasionally have one of the original characters pop in and do stuff.
But the producers wanted more of S1's characters, they were the popular ones. So they had to keep finding shit for them to do, while neutering Hiro in various ways since he could fix pretty much any problem in an instant. It became what cape comics are at their worst - a meandering mess with characters changing sides and dealing with dumb drama while never being in danger of actually getting killed for good.
