He created the greatest filmmaking achievement of all time that will probably never be topped, not with this industry anyway. He's deserved his retirement. Also he did a WW1 doc.

Since he owns Weta, and they're the top of film technology, I assumed he had tech skills. Then I watched an interview and he didn't know how anything works and gets annoyed by the engineers.

It's probably just this. Studio execs fucked The Hobbit by forcing him to make it a trilogy and add the elf/dwarf love triangle subplot. Why bother putting up with that kind of bullshit, especially after you already made some of the greatest films ever. Just take your money and focus on collecting WW1 aviation memorabilia or whatever. Let the studio assholes make capeshit or whatever garbage.
