It's possible he didn't fully understand how invincible Clark was and didn't want him to risk himself on his account. He had some idea but it isn't an exact science and he would not ask his son to risk himself even if the risk was low.
You're looking at this scene from an outside perspective, you understand who Superman is and what he's capable of. The characters do not have this bird's eye view.
