It was very good. It's the kind of film where you could see how mundane it could end up if another director made it:
>The witch needs to explain where she came from and what her goals are.
>We also need a scene where the kid explains to the two adults what's going on.
>No skipping from one character to the next, just have the film go from A to B.
>The witch needs more appearances with her splotchy make-up. That's our new horror icon!
>No need to spend so much time on the characters' personal lives. Whenever the witch isn't on screen, everyone should be asking "where's the witch?"
But seriously it was nice to watch a film like this. It's always more interesting when you get the impression that it was a more personal vision and not something designed by a committee.

She outright says that the parents weren't enough and she needs the kids to "get better".
At the end her hair is in visibly better condition. She was starting to get younger when she got discovered.
So it wasn't for "absolutely no reason". They just didn't spell it out for the audience.

retard, I didn't even said the movie is bad, I just said that the movie doesn't really have a real twist. It has reveals, a reveal CAN be a twist, but doesn't have to be. A (shitty) twist would've been for example that the children were never missing and the teacher just imagined the whole movie.

And also that the reason her plan was so sloppy (even unrealistic that they wouldn't catch her immediately) is that she thought the parents would be enough. And explicitly only went for the kids after she started sickening again, and that she was always planning to flee the town when the cops closed in after she'd sucked all the life she could get away with. I mean there's still a lot of weaknesses in the plot but it was pretty clear that her plan was always to suck out life force to cure her cancer for a while and then escape.

>>213745966
ok, fair, that even say that in the movie, I should've wrote it differently: The mechanics behind it are so unclear, it seems random.
Also she immediately starts with 17 children, not like 1 or 2, which makes it incredibly suspicious and draws a MASSIVE target on the one child left behind and its family, that it borders on a plot hole how little scrutiny they get.

>>213746104
That's another thing I appreciated. As someone who normally hates horror comedy, this flick kept the horror and comedy "segregated" so that they didn't step on each other's toes. The comedy was just in the druggies segment (immediately before the darkest parts of the movie, almost as a palette cleanser) and in a moment of catharsis at the climax. That's how it's done best.

I liked it a lot
I especially liked how well written the characters were, they had dimensionality. Justine wasn't just le virtuous teacher, she had problems, was sometimes naughty, sometimes obnoxious. I liked how Josh Brolin was both kind of a bully and also a bit of a fuck-up, and how his son apparently took after him, bullying Alex. I liked how Alex's dad had a bit of personality to him, not so subtly implying how he'd hoped Gladys would be dead within the month. Not just bland dorky dad or whatever, there was something interesting there.
Benedict Wong as the gay principal with a twink husband who'd prance around the grocery store asking which brand of fruity pebbles he preferred. How the principal both defended Justine to Brolin but also clearly was irritated with her, too.
Alden Ehrenreich seeming like a mostly good dude but being a weak personality, a recovering alcoholic prone to fits of anger, with a domineering 'sam brown in a dress' type wife.
Idk. As another anon posted if this were done by another director it could have been really bland. These characters and their rich personalities really made the whole thing shine.

Also, it's just a weird thing to do to lie to the audience in an opening narration, it's a place to set up the facts known in-universe and the narrator seems to tell the story from the viewpoint of a person who knows everything about it after the events already took place.

well. not really, the unreliable narrator is a fairly common trope.
"they never came back" is an acceptable way to describe what happened. the kids all left the house and, to our knowledge at the time, never returned.
You could argue the girls narration was following the story along with us. I mean, if you are going to accept some sort of omniscient narrator to begin with, what does it really matter?

That's why a clarified that the narrator here tells us that the events are already over. It's not that she is in the middle of the events or there is information she can't possibly know at that moment that she speculates on.
Yes, a narration in the beginning can tell "a lie" when they assume information in the story they can't know. 'I just moved in Mr. X former flat. Mr X is dead for 7 years at this point', but mid-story it is revealed that he just faked his death. That wouldn't make sense when the narrator tells the story 20 years later and witnessed Mr X coming back.

why are you so adamant that this isn't the case?
Ok, the timeline:
>The narration mentions 3 things I recall: The news buried it, people died horrifically and the children never returned
>The people died on the last day of the event.
Nobody died before in the movie, even if the narrator thinks the children are already dead after day 1 of the disappearance, how can she possibly know it was in a horrific way?
>The reaction of the news media to the event can happen at the earliest the day after the last day of the event because the event is the disappearance and the deaths
She doesn't even have to be omniscient to know this as a narrator, just be a normal person involved in the event, which she seems to be.
So the narrator must be talking to us at least 1+ day after the final day of the events (most likely longer, because she says how the news will react in the time after it). I was searching for the opening narration as the exact text, but couldn't find it.

Titles are very strong marketing tool, shocking revelation.
Shawshank Redemption was massively hurt by its title at the box office.
The Beach Boys suffered from their band-name for 50+ years because they couldn't establish themselves as a progressive music act because of it and hurt their career massively in the long run.

really strong first 3/4 but the end yet again was about witchy woo stuff when it could have been about MKULTRA and slightly hint at the weird shit surrounding Sandy Hook (the men in nun uniforms nearby) which it sort of was. I thought it might have gone in that direction because of the floating assault rifle. Also 2:17 look it up in the bile.

Movies don't have to be literal. Cregger said that specific image was inspired by David Lynch.
I'm not saying this makes the movie good, but I am willing to accept a bit of abstraction.
Additionally, what does 'Weapons', as a title, mean?
The story of the missing kids was 'weaponized' against institutions. The school, the police force.

no, but you are concocting an entirely different motivation of the witch that is not even implied. She only wants to take the life-force of the parents and stay hidden in the house until she is healed, it's her goal she expresses both vocally and in action, after that doesn't work (not enough life force) she kidnaps children and hides everything in the house.
Do you think the actual motivation of Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs was to give Clarice a promotion?

The opening narration calls Justine "Mrs. Gandy," so I was waiting a while to learn who her husband was, until I just decided the kid narrating it probably just fucked up slightly.
Kid actors being shit and unreliable makes me think about how well the Alex segment is handled. Maybe 15 minutes of the movie are shown from Alex's point of view, but he probably only has, like, ten lines in that time. It feels completely natural for a kid in that situation, but it has the added bonus of giving the child actor very few opportunities to screw up.

I don't remember it being Alex's house, but maybe you're right.
I think you have to think about what a gun represents to a guy like Archer -- a regular guy with a family who lives in a small town/suburb. Maybe a guy like that primarily thinks of firearms as something you use to protect your home and your family, and fend off intruders.
Archer's son Matthew has mysteriously disappeared. Archer views this as a failure to protect his son properly. In his dream, the symbol of Archer's protection (the gun) is marred by the symbol of his failure (2:17).
I had thought he dreamed about the gun floating over his own house, not Alex's, but I admit I don't remember clearly.
Also, I don't know if someone like Archer would actually own a rifle resembling the one in the dream, but maybe Cregger doesn't, either.

>Archer has a nightmare involving Matthew and a strange, large, floating assault rifle hovering in the sky over their house. Interestingly there is a poster of a large assault rifle in Matthews room, on the wall directly across from his bed where Archer is sleeping, perhaps partially contributing to Archer seeing this in the dream.
I didn't notice the poster. I took it as Archer's anger manifesting in his dream. Josh Brolin needs more roles as a general contractor. He fits the part so goddamn well. Pedro Pascal would've moped around the entire time.

What they did to the boy never sit well with me.
Boy suddenly acting quiet in school should have raised alarms. Boy buying soup? alone? Father not behaving right? Mother a stone cold bitch?
That aside it was an effective montage. I liked the part where Alex crossed the salt line. He was tormented by what the parasite was doing to his family and community and knew he had to no other choice but to do something. Stood by his parents, fed his bully, even asked the witch if a hospital could fix her. Good kid.

>Boy suddenly acting quiet in school should have raised alarms.
That's true, but I think one statement the movie is making is that people are increasingly isolated from each other, to the point that neighbors are often unapproachable near-strangers. It's viewed as inconvenient and taboo to sound the alarm about someone else's child in this town.
Justine reaches out to Alex, but the extent of her power is to do the "you know you can talk to me about anything" bit. Gladys tells Alex she'll know if he talks to anyone about what's going on at home, so he shuts down Justine's attempt to help him. Gladys's plan is only upset by Justine's meddling after Justine bypasses the prescribed methods of intervention -- she ignores explicit instructions by both a police officer and the school principal to stop investigating, and her investigation kicks off the chain of events that lead to Alex getting free of Gladys.
I think it's interesting that, IIRC, Gladys doesn't actually demonstrate any ability to spy on Alex, so she could be bullshitting, but he can't afford to test her. Aside from the supernatural horror, Gladys and Alex's home situation is like a real dysfunctional household.

What? Why would she let the kids be exposed when her whole plan is to keep them hidden? The weaponizing is a contingency, also unsure if she can control them after they go berserk. And in the end they do become weapons. But outside of the story, they maybe couldn't get away violence against kids, it usually hurts a movie's appeal.

children are being controlled by demonically influenced adults to kill other kids in these mass shootings and our hard held beliefs in the death of god have blinded us from spiritual threats
they are sucked of their life energy by adults who deal with the devil who are the ultimate benefactors of the deaths
people can resist and fight back if they work together, but with the death of god they must do so on the demons turf
a sequel in this schizomind would bring the return of god as a protective force that only interferes so much allowing free will

She certainly seemed like a greedy and short-sighted person. I'm guessing she was desperate or just an idiot by nature.
We can assume that she's done this before, since she talked about consumption. She's very old and has prolonged her life using this magic before. She thought that using the parents would be enough but it wasn't. My guess is that she's so old that she needs a more massive boost of life (or whatever she's draining them of) and just goes "let me get as many kids as possible". It wasn't smart, but either she wanted as much as possible as soon as possible, or she was just so arrogant that she didn't think of the consequences.
A bit like how she could have killed the teacher when she was asleep in the car, but instead took her hair and got her boss to kill his partner and chase her down. That's not a smart way of doing it, but she's a witch, not a genius serial killer. She obviously didn't care too much about whatever chaos she spread, she just wanted that child life energy.
I will agree that the police might have wanted to check out the sole remaining kid whose dad suddenly suffered a stroke leaving him unable to talk. But then again, it's small town police, and they talked to the family and went through their house. The kid went to school every day afterwards. The missing kids left by themselves, there wasn't really any sign of a crime taking place. It's not completely unreasonable to think that they wouldn't spend much time on a kid who didn't have anything interesting to say - he was as clueless as all the parents and the teacher. But yeah, not the strongest part of the plot.

I was wondering if maybe Gladys was wanting to use Justine as a mind controlled weapon, but Justine was just too strong willed to be controlled given Gladys's weakened state, so the mind control failed, prompting her to send Marcus out to kill her (most of the people she mind controlled were either children or people who had displayed some sort of weakness of will - Paul relapses and cheats and has a bad temper, James is an impulsive drug addict, Marcus acts like a pushover who struggles to assert control). But Gladys was able to control Archer, who seemed similarly stubborn and strong willed, so that explanation wouldn't hold up.

Parents are the first victims, they aren't enough to cure her ailment, mass kidnapping ensues and it goes south bc she was sloppy, greedy, and new to the gig
Killing her outside of the house where the kids are complicates her situation, a random psychotic episode unrelated to the disappearances throws off her scent
I'm hoping the sequel leaves these questions up in the air, and instead focuses on a more experienced witch with more spells

I got the impression that she had either taken the real aunt's identity or bluffed her way into the family, possibly using magic. It was made clear that the mother hadn't seen her for ages.
Also, her choice of words, consumption, makes her seem very old, much older than iit should be possible if this was her first go with magic.

Except for the part where they were moved anytime the cops came to inspect their house. Also it's just the entire point of the movie that the adults are all failing to help the children in their own ways. The cops are incompetent/lazy and more concerned about anniversary dinners and covering up their own corruption than finding the kids. Archer was a shit dad who was looking for his son as a way to make up for his own failings. The principal treated children as a job, and bureaucracy and rules were more important to him than their well-being. And Justine is selfish and performative in her "care" for the children, using the image of a caring teacher to make herself look like a better person than she is. The children are found in the end, but not because anyone genuinely had their best interest at heart.

The movie is largely about how men don't need to be as cautious or fearful as women. The idea of sharing the airbnb with a stranger is just an inconvenience for Skarsgard's character, but for the main woman trusting him is a gamble with her life on the line. It's made most obvious with Justin Long's character who finds a creepy murder bunker under the basement and his first thought is to measure it so he can add the square footage to the home's value. Men are allowed to brute force their way through life like a barbarian while women need to be borderline paranoid to ensure their safety.

I agree. The movie kind of leans on her being ultimately incompetent - she's a witch who knows one spell total and relies on it entirely, and isn't even aware of her own parameters. "Surely two adults will be enough to cure my cancer. Oh fuck! I'm going to die if I don't immediately ensorcell seventeen beloved local children and create a massive police investigation. Fuck, I'll just keep killing to cover it up until I'm forced to flee the town"
Like the cops and everyone are shockingly incompetent but so is she, approaching the classic witch hustle of eating children will all the delicacy of a crack addict chasing his fix.
Imaging her backstory, I wouldn't assume she was a smart witch by any means. She felt like she'd have been the mother's fuckup sister who got into drugs or something early, absolutely disappeared from family life, and then returns later when she's fucked up to beg the family that she abandoned for a place to stay. The only difference is that at some point she also fucked a Satanist and kept a tree that mind controls people when they broke up. But it's definitely the archetype of a shitty parasitic narcissistic personality.

I genuinely wonder if Gladys is just an anceint witch that has lived into the modern age.
Like maybe she did some resaerch about someone with a dead mother and somewhat unknown aunt she hasn’t known for a while, found that aunt, killed her, then took her place and inserted her self into that families life and she’s just been doing that forever to get her youth back?
Almost like a Parasite, right?

Wonder if it just gets harder to absorb youth the older you get, so you need a lot more to do it over time.

normalfag angle: Everyone inside are now weapons of the one controlling them
schizoid angle: sandy hook was an inside joke adam lanza was part of a controlled experiment of the us government where people are turned into agents through mk ultra indoctrination, the movie is an allegory to the mind control of the youth to commit violent school shootings to take away the WEAPONS of the general population

I mean i’ve always half-believed the conspiracy that these shootings are more common because they are just plants to get weapons taken away to have power taken from the people.
But the angle itself falls away when there are states that don’t require permits and would be utterly impossible to actually police the banning of weapons.
Based on statistics from a while back it’s speculated that every household in texas has at least 4 firearms within the home.

Me neither.
Take into consideration that we don’t see the mom and dad interract with her either outside of what they say in the morning.
Also that she wears a wig. Really funny though that a woman for all intents and purposes who is trying to lay low picks the loudest, most grotesque look possible to be seen in the public.

Friend dragged me to watch this, i don't usually watch horror movies in current year, because most of them are boring and predictable, but this was somewhat original, but it's still plagued by classic horror low iq characters, and you have to "just turn off your brain bro" through some part of the movies. The POV style of the movie although cool, was used to artificially prolong the movie, half of the povs were irrelevant, like cop and the crackhead.
All in all 6/10, the main thing is it keeps your attention and you wont be bored

Yeah it was good in a 3 out of 5 stars way , but it shows the sad state of the movie industry that basically the best original movie in a year is only a bit better than decent.
the main problem is that the changing points of view and spent too long on the quite dull parts of the story.
It was really so-so or average with a great ending.

I'm pretty sure the boy was always quiet, only people who knew him well like the teacher could notice a difference in his behavior, but i agree the detective work in the movie would be done better by a detective with downs.
Like nobody noticed the pattern of kids running direction except Brolin, and nobody keeping a watch over the most obvious suspect the kid that didn't get taken.

>make something original
Sort of. It was just a pastiche of about 4 other films.
>with good story
Definitely not. The story is entirely "we lied in the trailer, the kids didn't actually go missing, a kid's witchy aunt has them in her basement".
>with great settings
A generic small town in the US...
>a horror movie
It was a black comedy, there was no actual horror.
>with unsettling atmosphere
The only unsettling part in the whole thing was the hypnotised woman getting into the back seat of the car while noodlehair teacher was asleep.
>with twist in the end
There wasn't a twist. They revealed the "mystery" halfway through, and nothing changed from then on out.
What the fuck movie did you think you watched?

We've reached an impasse; trailers are better than the movies, give too much away or present an entirely different story, and often contain edits not present in the final cut

constantly crying about failing to protect everyone, the soldier line, being a general contractor, etc
keep in mind this role was originally for pedro pascal so brolins tougher screen presence doesn't mesh with the character as well

It is better than Barbarian but there are no "original" horror films because it is a dead genre. Every horror movie that "needed" to be made has been made. You can still make original films though with a horror atmosphere like The Lighthouse or Skinamarink.
