Sometimes, you want to do something "against type" on purpose, just to try it and see how it goes. Sometimes it can fail, but the attempt is usually praiseworthy in itself, to try something different, show a bit of range. By making a very normal, conventional sort of movie, Lynch did just that, and did a fine job of it.
I rented the DVD once. There was a slightly pretentious insert which seemed to condescend just a little to the film's target audience (families, children, people in general), but not too much. It explained Lynch's strong preference against the chapter-stop, which was an expectation on most DVDs (and which Lynch always prevented on DVDs where he had creative control). It basically ran thus: "Hi, I'm David Lynch. Thank you for watching my movie. When you play the movie, you will notice that there isn't a menu to skip from scene to scene, which you can do on most DVDs. This is on purpose. I feel very strongly that films should be watched all the way through, from beginning to end, which is why there's no chapter stops on this DVD. I hope you enjoy the film."
