Home Box Office
Why wasn't it named Home Movie Theater? Did people really say I went to the box office last night?

No they said "I sure do like living in a white neighborhood" and if they saw a faggot on their tv that wasn't a comic relief character they went out and shot a recognizable local news talent, like he was responsible or something.

The implication is its a box office in your home. In other words you don't have to go out to buy tickets to a movie, they're right there on your own tv

As a europoor, I never had HBO, but this is absolute kino:
https://youtu.be/SqjWxSNKEMI?feature=shared

It was so epic, they even did a making of. It blows me away that the bit at the end that you think is CGI is all motion control polished metal with all kinds of old-school enhancements.

We equate "box office" with success. You think of HIT movies when you think of HBO. It's not a theater experience. It was presented in 4:3 for the first 40 years.

Those were great shows too. Our tastes change as we age and evolve I guess. I like new music less and less just like *most TV and movies. But I can't really point to any reason why it sucks. I'm not some conspiracy nut saying it's planned and decided on. Newer generations of writers and producers are making things they want to make and it just doesn't click with people who are older. CGI and digital and the lack of practical effects, the lack of the $30m budget movie, these are things that ruin modern movies for me just as much as changing trends.
I've been spending much more time reading books. I'm glad I don't like TV and movies as much anymore.

Miss the old HBO promo between movies where a camera went down a miniature sized towns streets then zipped up to the HBO logo. Last time I remember them using it was back in the early 00s. Dad told me they used it since the early 80s. Every time I saw it after he died, it kinda made me tear up remembering watching new-on-HBO movie premieres Fridays and Saturdays with my parents back in high school.

We had HBO from '88-'90 and that shit was the coolest ever. Then like Lucas or Wildcats or One Crazy Summer would come on after. And it's summer so it's still light out and I could be playing outside, but the R-rated movie mom and dad are going to let us watch is starting.
I can remember it like it was yesterday. The 19" TV. This cable box. If you held the knob just right between channel 27 and 28 you could get Showtime 90% clear.
They had totally different shows and movies. You'd get a free weekend a few times a year and could sample having premium cable. Maybe that's why we got HBO.

Didn't the white guy win? I remember that show. And Taxicab Confessions. And Real Sex. Holy shit, they had some wild stuff on there. That's one show you can't find anymore. They pulled so much from their archives. I'd like to see Lucky Louie again. I didn't really like it at the time. The holy grail is still Dream On. I never got to stay up for it and it's unavailable in any form. I'm going to look into VHS on ebay or something. People would have religiously taped a show with regular boobs. I know the tapes are out there even though it's a licensing nightmare to get the music and TV show releases to ever see it on DVD. Seasons 1&2 only.

Did anyone else get HBO or other premium channels for free by mistake? Occasionally it would happen to us and we'd get a couple of them for free, and it wasn't the free weekends either. It would usually only last a couple of weeks before it got cut off again, but one time we got HBO and Cinemax and the Disney Channel (used to be premium) for the better part of a year if not more. We knew it wouldn't last forever but it was a sad day when we came hom from school and they were scrambled again.

Crazy thing was when HBO started, it was a broadcast channel, at least in metro Detroit. You could pick it up with a standard antenna. Of course it was scrambled, so you need a special receiver box. Once cable spread enough, they stopped the broadcasts. I'm surprised they never got in trouble with the FCC because even though it was scrambled, you could hear everything and sometimes you'd get short bursts of unscrambled video.

This was absolute kino. Basically a forerunner for The Sopranos (as was Oz).
It's such a shame that the proposed 'Gotti 2', with Assante returning, has not materialised in two years already.
Obviously it would cover Gotti's last days, given how old Assante is now. I guess they'd have to rely on flashbacks to different actors too much.
