I always assumed it was sprung from some kind of poorly thought out idea that "It's the year 2000 let's make a "________ 2000" version of old property!" that was probably popular at the time. Maybe

They shouldn't have even bothered making a sequel after John Belushi died, out of respect.

It was a great performance and he can sing. The soundtrack is aces, the story just blew. I listen to these tracks often.

In retrospect Belushi's brother wanted nothing to do with it, and the studio was going to make a sequel no matter what. They could have done a lot worse.

John Belushi was never funny.
Dan Akroyd was never funny.
Weekend Update was never funny.
SNL has always been hit-or-miss.

It came out in 98 though which was a bit too soon. I think audiences picked up on the tryhard marketing. And the original is an ok movie but there wasn't any nostalgia for it.

Yeah. It's not a good movie but the soundtrack is great.

It's funny cause back in the day if you had a sequel that came out 18 years after the fact and also had one of the two main stars (who died) replaced everybody would trash it and call it the worst sequel of all time. Now it's common practice.

Valid but also your mistake was seeing Blues Brothers as an offshoot of SNL instead of the reverse

Tbh Goodman is a much better actor than Jim Belushi
