I just don't understand how Friends is seen as this big cultural phenomenon, one of the greatest shows of all time, etc... when its the same formulaic sitcom shit we've always seen. Cheers, Frasier, WKRP, Mary Tyler Moore, all did it better.

Mediocrity always goes far. Look at Big Bang and 2 1/2 Men. Seinfeld was one of the few #1 shows to be appreciated by critics and the intelligentsia as well as the rest of the populace. Friends was never quite as big a deal, but mainstream audiences continue to love it and it probably translates better to a new generation than Seinfeld does.
