>I always thought the scaly shit was retarded and she should've just been a blue woman with no pupils
I was never a big fan of it myself, but I think it was just because they were afraid painting someone blue was going to look like 60's star trek. Sort of like superman's suit (or super suits in general) in the snyder movie. It can't just be spandex, it has to be that weird looking webbing, because it films better.
And you can make things work in a 2d illustration that doesn't have to worry about the laws of physics, or gravity, or practicality. I was genuinely surprised they pulled off wolverine's mask in the deadpool movie, because that was always fucking weird and inconsistent from the same artist panel to panel (looking straight ahead they come out like horns on the side, from the side they smooth swept back horns that poke up, from 3/4 profile they're sweeping out).
Also a lot of super hero color schemes have their origin in the economics of color print. Red, yellow, and blue are the primary colors of CMYK newsprint. Secondary colors need twice the ink, and so you usually left that to highlights and accents because at the end of the day you're selling disposable trash to kids to advertise fruit and pudding pies.
