That's why he called it 'Gonzo journalism'. It was frequently his personal musings about an event and any craziness that also happened durring said event. Most of his collection of letters are also entertaining. He had a unique interpretation of things.

he was actually a decent journalist and sports reporter in his earlier years
then he got famous writing a "tell all" book about living with the hells angles for a year, got really into the counter culture and started his gonzo era, right time and place kinda thing
there are a few people in the movie like the cop and hotel clerk who know who he is, and what became eventually fear and loathing was a series of articles he wrote for the rolling stone magazine
but to answer your question- he was a journalist, then successful, then got into drugs and it became his shtick, which made him the "legend" he was after

I enjoyed HST's writing until I read Kerouac and realized HST was just aping him. He was desperately trying to be to the Hippies what Kerouac was to the Beats and not letting the truth get in the way.
The big difference between them was Kerouac was painfully and embarrassingly honest and Thompson was all about self-aggrandizement.
