The special effects designers were on a crunch after Burton rejected using an inflatable suit for the scene and they settled with making a PG body horror scene with a few visual gags thrown. It looks good for 2005 but was rushed up to the production deadline. The crunch period for the CGI blueberry was also why the inventing room is so dark in the movie.
