European presence in the Asia-Pacific area beyond a few traders and missionaries running around only started to grow in the first half of the 19th century, after establishing bases of operations in India and introducing steam propulsion. The first time a large European army could be deployed to East Asia was in 1839 with the First opium war. Which incidentally was in part about punishing China for mistreating missionaries.
2. Until the mid-17th century, only the Portuguese and Dutch knew how to get to China and Japan by sea, and kept the maps secret. By the time they were leaked to the other European powers, Europe was too busy fighting itself. Hence why exploration resumed in the 1830s, after the Napoleonic wars ended and Europe was stable again.
