The graphic novel is a perfect, self-contained, no-frills story that is 20% history and 40% violence and about the masculine urge to sacrifice yourself for your fellow warriors and your people, and 40% cheesy fantasy.

The movie is, honestly as close to identical to the comic book as it's possible to be. The acting is good in that it's not "good", it's cheesy and comic-book-y. The music is good in that it's literally just ripping heavy metal and fantasy stuff. And the story is lean and trim without any real fat or dead weight.

It's a good movie. Concise, to the point, gives you everything you didn't know you wanted.

The original material is an obvious homoerotic parody. Of course, Snyder didn’t get it (he made Watchmen after all) and thought it was very cool. And here’s the issue, if you wanna remove the parody parts and make it 100% about badassery and masculinity, at least remove the original homoerotic outfits.
If spartans wore a cuirass and a more practical outfit it would have been way cooler and less corny. Because you can’t really tell if this is the director’s fetish or a serious movie when you see almost naked buffed dudes all the time.
