Every season there’s a meltdown, like clockwork. They see Cartman in a MAGA hat and instantly go nuclear. Meanwhile the same people laughed for years at hippies, rednecks, atheists, vegans, Mormons, Canadians, and every president from Bush to Biden getting dragged.

The show has been an equal-opportunity offender since the 90s. That’s literally the entire point. But Indians online treat it like a personal slight against their entire community if it ever brushes against Trump or American politics in a way they don’t like.

the difference today (and not just south park, but many many things related to entertainment) is that nothing is being made from a perspective of fun and humor and good times anymore, it's explicitly being made from a stance of resentment. resentment is the rotting fruit smell of media, it's always extremely self evident and it is the despoiler of itself. it's why identifying "woke" became such a thing. it has nothing to do with blacks or gays or whatever, but the manner in which they're used as petulant ideology-pushing rebellion against basic decency and normal attitudes of life.

It’s like when Issac Hayes left, but this time it’s magapedes. I think SP is shit compared to how it used to be, but that’s because it’s begun to cling to season-long story arcs and recurring jokes, rather than sticking to its old format where each episode had its own plot and started with a clean slate. I think this is because it’s gone on so long and the production costs have increased, so it’s too expensive and time demanding to come up with something fresh for each episode these days.

Plus, the social and political atmosphere anymore seems to be suspended in limbo and the same handful of topics is recycled over and over again in all forms of media. There’s no more hot-button topic of the week, it’s just all, “Trump did this and this person died” or “Trump did that and a plane crashed.” It’s all “Trump and _______ happened.” No matter what else is going on, Trump is there too.
