They didn't though. They picked Franco. And you saw what happened when Mr. Religion got command. He decided it was a message from God that they should colonize the engineer world instead.

this movie falls apart before they even step a foot on the fucking planet

>on a mission to get to a specific planet
>wake up from cryosleep halfway there
>"hey i don't wanna go back to cryosleep, maybe we can just bring the settlers to this other planet that is closer"

IT'S NOT THE CREW'S FUCKING CALL TO MAKE THAT DECISION

>stop trying to cancel me because of my faith! That settles it, we are going to this planet to die from aliens.

Ever since after the second alien movie, they've discarded the idea that space travel or communications takes a while. Even if they still use hypersleep, they can still fly to other planets pretty quickly for no reason. The idea here was that a solar flare damaged their ship and killed a lot of the crew, so they wanted to take a breather before getting back in, since there really was no rush. In the meantime, they detected an intelligent signal from that planet, and not only that, but it was human music, so yeah, they had a responsibility to at least investigate. What they could have found was something as simple as a ship crashed a few years ago and they rescue the survivor, then move on. No reason to suspect there were aliens and certainly not an insane Earth Android that wanted to kill them all with his personal alien monsters. Since they also made shuttle landings trivial, there's no reason not to take a slight detour to investigate, fly down for a day or two, then continue on your journey to the colony and have a report to tell.

first of all, human music coming from a planet randomly in the dead of space is suspicious as fuck

second, sending humans to the planets surface to investigate is also the worst idea possible considering how pathogens work

Not suspicious, definitely interesting since there'd be no reason to suspect foul play in the middle of space. Unless you knew you're in a horror movie, then of course you'd be suspicious of anything.

>sending humans to the planets surface to investigate is also the worst idea possible
Semi-agree. It was good to investigate the planet, but they should have had space suits on. Or they could have just sent Walter. It was very dumb to just wander around with nothing protective on, but Ridley needed them to get infected.

I used to think that scene where the scientists try to pet that alien snake in Prometheus was retarded too, but then I realized that the human race is portrayed that way on purpose, because humans are totally retarded and shouldn't even exist quite frankly. Then I realized these movies were kino.
