it's a bittersweet rewatch for me because of how rich the writing is in the early seasons and how hooking all the plot threads are. then I eventually remember it's all going to go to shit and what plot threads will go unresolved or have incredibly dissatisfying endings.

I actually enjoyed my second re-watch more, I think partially because I didn't have to spend like 10 years to watch it, so every bad episode felt less like a fuck you, but also because you mostly just remember the worst moments, and forget the (increasingly)few nuggets of decent.

It really is crazy how different the writing in seasons 1-3 is compared to later. People always say season 5 is where the problems started but really the cracks in the show started in season 4. By season 6 it had abandoned all pretense of being anything other than a theme park ride with shock value.

Not at all. He was very interesting. He had a whole crew of badasses going by the end of Season 2. He was the smartest of all the gladiators and had powerful connections, which is how he was going to be getting his own ludus and freedom. That alone makes him worthy of being star of a show. He's a schemer like Batiatus, and will need to compete against other powerful Romans who see him as an unworthy upstart slave. They'll want to kill him off and take his shit. There's zero other characters as interesting to make a show about and I'm really interested to see where they take it. I've seen the actor in other shows and he always elevates it.
