It's an extremely fair and centrist film, which is exactly why it got walk outs at the "pretentious onions film festival TM". It makes fun of both sides aggressively which is why it got borderline mixed reviews. It's his best work and proved Ari is a true filmmaker. Something I think is smart about the film is it avoids Trump, much like in actual 2020 all the shit going on at that time overshadowed him, especially in small towns where national politics is rarely relevant. He has ambiguously conservative, Western values; particularly being fixated on classical liberal freedom and Christian love.
He's not motivated by more base or malicious instincts like racism or political radicalism, he's simply motivated by the fact that Ted is pushing policies that harm the well-being of the town and are destroying what remains of the meager local economy; and he's especially pissed off by the egomania and power trip Ted is getting from the COVID stuff that feeds into his worst instincts.
He's not even really radicalized that much politcally regarding ideology or beliefs, he just becomes exponentially more radical in the ways he stands up to Ted and eventually the manufactured chaos/disorder consuming the town that he doesn't figure out until its too late.
