Well you see grandpa Batman and Superman fighting isn't some weird new concept, it’s been around since The Dark Knight Returns in 1986. That comic was written to reinvent Batman after years of campy takes, and it literally ends with Batman in power armor fighting Superman at the government’s orders. Snyder’s movie pulled straight from that it’s not random at all. I don't understand how someone who is familiar with Batman or even Superman wouldn't already know about this.
If you’re old enough (say, someone who was a teen or young adult in the ’80s), you’d already know about The Dark Knight Returns, where Batman and Superman fight. That comic is practically required reading for Batman fans and has been famous for decades.

Not to take the Son of Dob's side, but this comic is right. DC overestimated how much people liked Snyder's vision of a darker universe after the success of Man of Steel. They imagined everyone was like the guy on the left, a proto-Snyder truther, when in reality most of the audience, even if they liked MOS, would be confused by the tone and concept of BvS. Hence, DC should've been more aware of the gap between their new, more hardcore fans who liked Snyder's storytelling and the general public, the latter of which largely rejected the movie.
