Since you didn't add critically acclaimed shows that had a bad ending...

BBC's the detectorists spends the entire show setting up a treasure hunt in a field, the ending reveals the buried stuff was actually in a tree just above them in a magpie's nest. Nothing mattered, nothing was learned, the rest of the plot petered out completely other than the "mystery". No one talked about it and that was that.

Barry's ending. In fact, the whole last season, it was so painfully moralfaggish it stopped being funny. So incredibly tone-deaf, occasional looney tunes-tier jokes mixed with Silence of the Lambs tension, the GUNS AND VIOLENCE ARE LE BAD OK was beaten over the head so many times it annoyed the shit out of me

Not the worst ever by any means but I really dislike how Breaking Bad ended.

Ozymandias was the perfect place to stopa and the final 2 episodes made the ending way too neat. Walt deserved to fail and spend the final months of his life in isolation and regret, instead they gave him a storybook ending where he kills all his enemies, frees and makes up with Jesse and manages to take care of his family without legal ramifications

That would have been unsatisfying because it's how he starts out at the beginning of the series. His arc being circular wouldn't work. It's about his ego consuming him, his death is the only logical conclusion. At the same time he's shunned by his family and the material gain rings hollow. Walt never needed to learn a lesson or become a better man or learn the error of his ways. He becomes who he was meant to be.

I'm not even sure how the meme started. I feel like anybody at the time who was willing to stick with LOST to the very end was probably also on board to just go with the ending no matter how meta or convoluted it was.
The vast majority of normies at the time crashed out on Lost in season 2 or 3, they never even made it to the time travel arc.
Was it just journalists drumming up complaints to the normies who already stopped watching, and those normies just took that as justification for dropping out?
Thats my best guess anyway

I usually hate this term but it was a lack of media literacy by the fans. The writers were openly mocking the crazy, self-righteous, liberal white women who self-inserted as Danerys. All of them were blindsided and pissed off when it was revealed that "Danerys" is the actual cause of everyone's problems, and the only reason "Danerys" hasn't been murdered yet is because people want to fuck her.

It's not like the son & daughter were now the hottest properties in Hollywood and their schedules were filled for the next 6 years.

GoT and Lost were always Mystery Box trash. The endings were not particularly bad, they just spelled out that the shows never had anything interesting to say, in terms that were so blatant that even the most brain dead normie could understand it, albeit only on an instinctive level.

Of course, the finale is incomprehensible if you haven't actually watched and paid attention to the show, so people came away thinking "they were dead all along".

Nah, here's where it gets really weird. Donald Bellisario, the creater behind Quantum Leap swore that there was never any other ending, all the footage rumors were fake, as were the "scripts", etc for years and years. And then like 6 years ago some random burner account on Reddit posted leaked footage of an actual alternate ending to the show and Bakula even confirmed it was real. Why was he lying about it for so long then?

As someone who really loves the books, Game of Thrones really started to suck for me as early as S2 when they started giving everyone paper mache armor to save money.

I would honestly say S1 is the only 5 star season because it's the only one that is almost a 1:1 adaptation of the books with high budgeted costumes and sets.
Even though they had the BIGGEST HIT SHOW IN THE WORLD, for some reason, they decided to start cost-saving in S2 (what the fuck is wrong with Hollywood)

On the opposite side of this, what are some endings that are so good they retroactively improve the show as a whole when you go back and rewatch it? For me, the best finale in TV history has to be The Shield. It's unforgivingly brutal to its characters and wraps everything up satisfyingly but also having some ambiguity to keep people talking near the end. You couldn't pull off a more perfect ending. The show was still excellent beforehand but the way it stuck the landing when most shows don't is what made it, for me at least, the best show ever.

There's an alternate ending that is significantly better than the actual ending and sticks to the themes of the show and the characters instead of sticking to a script written nearly a decade ago when the characters were way flatter and undeveloped

System Shock 2.

I descended into hell for a face-off with the devil herself, and once again, the fight was a little nonsensical and not that difficult at all, just hack the terminals and you're golden. Then, my game went back to the title screen because the cutscenes don't work (for some reason they worked at the beginning of the game, but not now. Ugh.), so I looked up the ending on YouTube, and I could not believe what I had watched.

At first, I thought it was a joke, a cheeky edit by whoever had uploaded the video and was playing some SilvaGunner-esque prank on whoever thought this was the real ending, and I found another video hoping it would be a little more sensible. This was no prank. This...thing was the real ending to the game I had just completed. I was floored. I was shocked. I was in pure disbelief. I couldn't believe all the tension, all the fear, all the worldbuilding and character development that the game had built up over it's 20-hour runtime, culminated in something so lame and cheesy it makes the average Gmod video look like Shakespeare by comparison. I was insulted, saddened, and angered: I felt like I had been stabbed in the back. I took the game so damn seriously, expecting to be rewarded for my commitment, and this is how they treat me? This is the ending I get after 20 hours of hell? These were the thoughts that ran through my head as I closed the video. These were the thoughts that ran through my head as I read the video's comments, perused forums, and even learned the development history behind this atrocity of a conclusion. These were the thoughts that ran through my head as I began to type this. What I had just experienced almost invalidated everything I had been through. The amazing atmopshere, exciting gameplay, engrossing story: all of it was eradicated from my memory because of this one awful moment, this two-minute cutscene in a twenty-hour game.

||A whole lot of shit happens but basically White Rose has a Large Hadron Collider that they believe will allow them to create new timelines. Elliot is trapped as the LHC slowly melts down and explodes - and he awakens in a totally normal existence where he's a clean-cut well-liked normie at E-Corp and Tyrell is a wigged out weirdo coder. When Elliot comes home from work, he runs into the hoodie hacker Elliot we know from the main show - and kills our Elliot. As he tries to hide the body etc, the world starts degenerating more and more. We find out that this an alternate world, but Elliot is in a coma and drifting in and out - but the Elliot we've seen the entire show is a different personality separate from Mr Robot - "The Mastermind". This goes all the way back to the first season episode where Elliot has those drug fever dreams and he sees Angela saying "There's another one. The third one." The real original base Elliot was locked away mentally to protect him after the years of abuse and molestation he suffered (the abuse was revealed way before the ending btw) and trapped him in a mental loop. He realizes that the now that the evil is gone and done, the real Elliot can be safe again - so The Mastermind makes the hard decision to mentally kill himself, which is represented as him going to a movie theater with his deceased loved ones and watching a showing of all his life up until this point, his eyes welling up with tears as M83's Outro plays (very fitting lol). Elliot, the real Elliot, awakes for the first time since childhood in his hospital bed, and Darlene is there, smiling. And both of them are centered for the first time in the show.||

It's honestly very moving and it also makes you appreciate a lot of other elements in retrospect because as the show went on, Elliot actually started to do more and more cruel and manipulative things to get his way, so recontextualizing it with that really makes for an interesting second viewing.

TWD was never good. It was a soap opera in a zombie setting. The show was only popular because zombies were in vogue 15 years ago. The characters are shit and so is the acting. The plot moved slower than the walkers and it didnโ€™t even have the writing or atmosphere to make up for it.

No, it was downhill after s4. S5 and 6 were still fun but the magic was gone and the writing was getting dumber with every episode. But after Sansa had her shit pushed in, and the internet had a fucking collective aneurysm, D&D removed every bit of sex, gore and edge from the show which resulted in season 7 and 8 being the dogshit that they were. It was literally the last thing the show still had and they killed even the tone. I would have traded a thousand battle of the bastards for one more bad pussy scene.

basically it ends with no characters confirmed to be in a relationship, so the romance subplots go unresolved
that's it, that's the complete extent of the supposedly horrible ending, although that won't stop these people from spinning it into something it's not (read: flat out fucking lying)
the real shitshow was (and still is) watching the ultra contrarians on this website lose their fucking minds every time something happens, only to be proven wrong each and every time

Yeah it's actually amazing.
I liked it when it came out, but didn't watch after S5 or so.
Then years later rewatched the entire thing, and after the last season haven't had any desire to rewatch anymore. In fact, the finale retroactively ruined the entire show for me.

Yeah pretty much. The whole story was written from start to finish when he made the first episode (originally he wrote Mr Robot as a film) so everything has really satisfying payoff and there's tons and tons of foreshadowing all throughout the series about things, a lot of which even went unnoticed the first time. It's really tightly written.

Saw Slegde Hammer earlier this year. Great show, really funny. The last episode was absolutely awful to the point where it has to have been intentional. An absolutely brutal humiliation ritual for the main character.
Sledge gets bullied and humiliated by his ex-wife the whole episode, who hasn't even appeared previously in the show, only been mentioned. Then in the final scene he out of nowhere proposes to his female colleague, who of course turnes him down because they didn't have that kind of relationship. The final seconds of the show you see Sledge looking absolutely broken and almost on the verge of tears, and then the episode is over.

None of the other episodes were like this at all.

It should have failed at the end and Walt should have been forced to kill at least one man with his own hands in some brutal, fucked up struggle between a man dying of stage 4 cancer and a guy with a gut wound. There should have been a real question about whether he makes it. Something like the knife fight in Saving Private Ryan.

Game of thrones sucked since season 4 or 5 though albeit sure, the last season touched untapped levels of low. Not only the show died but the careers of everyone involved died as well, except for Dinklage whoยดs been artificially sustained by quotas and inclusion. Even D&D turned to dust to the point their last show was pretty much collectively ignored even by shills.

Generally writers have a vague idea of what is gonna happen or how something is gonna end. Lost and that jew jj abrams invented "mystery box" writing with the show where they just say fuck it make weird stuff happen and never explain it or have any explanation in mind. Every shitty sci fi mystery show on streaming apps follows this now and just churns out dogshit that people stop watching after 10 episodes anyways so they never need to wrap the show up

Yeah. I'm sure grrm told them those things were planned for the ending, they just had no easy way to get there because of the way they set shit up in the previous seasons, certain characters omitted, etc. Instead of adding an extra season to make it work, they were too busy eyeing Disney bucks and fucked everything up.

Every single character lost 20 IQ points. I mean, dumb persons cannot write intelligent characters. Fat fuck, for all his fat fuckery, is intelligent and a good writer. D&D are one half daddy's billionaire banker son and his dumb fuck buddy. They literally cannot write on their own.

After season 4 people start teleporting all over Westeros. People stop talking in sentences and merely quip. And people just kinda forgot what happened ten minutes earlier.

Season one is one of the best television of all time. Season two to four is excellent to very good. Season five takes a dive and from then on season six to the end of the series is absolute fucking garbage. It almost made RoP seem well written.

>After season 4 people start teleporting all over Westeros
This took me out of the show. It would take an entire season to travel from one place to another, and then suddenly it would take about a day to cross most of Westeros. Also the characters just started standing around and talking but not really doing much, especially the last two seasons. They would continue to build shit up like the battle of the bastards and winter is coming shit, only for it to be shrugged off in 40 minutes. And of course, how god-awful the last season was. Winter is coming...for about a day, and then back to balmy weather. Wasn't winter supposed to last decades? The show was already grinding into the ground by S6, but destroyed itself by the end, making the entire thing seem rather pointless.

It suffered from its own version of superhero fatigue. The final fight dragged on for over 2 years in the manga and by that point so many characters had been introduced it was pretty much impossible to give them all a satisfying closure.
It also deflated in popularity the more it went on like Bleach so you get the feeling both the fans and the author wanted to be done with the whole thing.

Lost is a show where the journey really is more important than the destination.
The only retarded people were the ones holding out every week for answers and crying about it. Most questions were actually answered by the end to but nobody seems to remember that.

there was nothing wrong with the ending of Seinfeld, just boomers and gen x at the time mad because it didn't live up to their expectations.
It's the GOAT sitcom, so they were expecting to be blown away, and it was just a good episode, so they got butthurt and all complained simoltaneously
it's also one of those early internet hivemind situations where most people who watched it just shrugged and said it was alright, but then they went online and to work and heard people complain about it, and on tv, and in magazines, and were told it was bad so they all just said "oh yeah if everyone says it's bad then it must be bad"

I have never heard a real coherent argument about what was wrong with the finale of Seinfeld

For one thing, the main 4 characters were flanderized to the point of parody. Each one behaved in ways they literally never had in the previous 9 seasons. Secondly, the main plot revolves around them all โ€œpayingโ€ for their poor behavior through the years, which completely goes against the ethos of the show that Larry David himself established: No hugging. No lessons. To pull a 180 on the foundational aspect of your show in the final episode is bizarre at best, especially since it wasnโ€™t particularly funny.

except the journey is massively undermined by the people writing it not knowing where the story is going and having to constantly write around it. season after season you get the same pattern of
>character claims to know what's up
>only ever drops cryptic hints
>is eventually revealed to not really know what's up at all
they effectively can't write anything else because what's actually up won't be decided until season 6. it's an idiotic way to write fiction and the reason why most viewers dropped it as soon as they noticed the pattern. and then of course because you've just spent 5 years writing a story without knowing what the point is you have accumulated so many constrains that in the end you can only resolve it with
>it's all magic and it all had to happen in this retarded way because that's how magic works because we say so

exactly. the scene they actually go to prison for in particular is completely out of character which ruins the entire misguided "point" of the finale. i think people would have bought the prison ending if it was at least preceded by a real seinfeld episode in which the kind of retarded petty scheming they normally engage in massively blows up in their faces.

What really soured me on LOST was JJ Abrams openly admitting that the writers didn't even remember most of the shit they wrote, so they had to reference fansites, forums, and wikis in order to keep everything straight. It's like the show was just one gigantic stream of consciousness retcon happening in real time. No one had a coherent plan, they just kept digging up shit they forgot online and using whatever they wanted to do whatever sounded good in the moment for that episode.

The decline started long before the ending
Author had no idea where to take the story after Soul Society arc and just kept introducing new characters in the hopes that he would get some story ideas
The next arc ended up just being exactly the same as SS but with Orihime captured instead of Rukia
Then Quincy war had such ridiculous power creep that it was impossible to get invested in any fight
There were multiple fights where the heroes could not defeat a bad guy only for some badder bad guy to step in and kill his ally
All of this took 100s of chapters BTW 50 chapters is a year in the real world for a weekly series)

The real point is by the time it ended Hori had lost the plot and was just winging it.

I won't deny that, but that's an unfortunate reality of tight weekly manga deadlines

Bi-weekly now, the coronavirus and the One Piece guy made it the new meta
And now mangakas are aware of their shitty endings and are organically concluding their stories instead of letting them dribble on forever, Demon Slayer was the biggest thing in anime world and its author still ended it where he planned to end it all along

I get your point but it still wasn't a satisfactory ending for me. Season 2 of atla will remain as the best thing that franchise has produced.
