Death notes are just regular notebooks, they're not magic. The killing is done by the God of Death and the shinigami like Ryuk are glorified jannies doing the dirty work picking the victims to extend their own lifespan.

Light, L and the other boy geniuses are all motivated by individualist ego. And they all justify their actions as being beneficial to society. They are only different by context, swap any of their lives with each other and you end up with the same scenario playing out. There is no actual heros or villains because Death Note is about the morality of "justice"

The narrator literally tells you after the time skip that people are miserable and living in constant fear of Kira because no one wants to accidentally get on his shit list. It's like a surveillance police state times a thousand because you can be killed anywhere, any time, at the whim of someone who may not even share the same morals as you.

How is this any different from being "afraid" of the government and police? At least with Kira you get someone who actually believes in some form of justice not just a jewish shadow gobermint putting microplastics in your water supply.

Why didn't Light write all the task force and SPK names he knew in preparation for the final showdown with Near?

It was already established with the way Light killed the FBI agents that the Death Note can be used conditionally (i.e. FBI agents die after receiving the email file) not just based on time.

Light wrote that the bus jacker would die after seeing Ryuk.

In both cases, Light did not have an exact time written for the death since he could not have known the time it would take to convince Ray to give him his FBI ID (for the busjacking) or to threaten Ray into writing the name of his superior (for killing the FBI agents).

Light could have written a conditional note such as "all these people die when they hear the phrase 'I am Kira'". That way, even if Mikami failed, Light still had a way of killing everyone except Near. At this point, Light could have just asked Mikami to bring a gun and/or Light could have stolen a gun from the fallen task force members and finished Near off.

"[insert all task force and SPK member names here] attend the meeting at the warehouse showing no outwards signs of being controlled. They hear the phrase 'I am Kira', toss their weapons in the direction of the speaker and die of a heart attack."

Am I missing something here or would this have been an easy way for Light to ensure his victory even if Mikami failed?

>How is this any different from being "afraid" of the government and police?
I literally drew a comparison to that very thing, work on your reading comprehension. The biggest difference is that the government and police can't make me keel over dead from a heart attack without ever touching me. Imagine living in the UK, but every time you break one of their inane rules there's a good chance you just instantly die without warning.
>but Light believes in justice and blah blah blah
You know that because you're watching a TV show where he's the main character and you get to hear his thoughts. The people in the world don't know who the fuck this guy is, they just know he can kill anyone at any time for any reason. Would you really want to live in a world where some random guy you don't know is the judge, jury, and supernatural executioner who can just decide some random thing you did was worthy of death?

>>213787895
See above, at least the government can't just literally strike you dead with only your name using supernatural powers. I'm not saying our current system is good, I'm saying it's better than one guy who can kill anyone, anywhere, any time deciding whose crimes deserve death.

Hubris + they had to have a big brain showdown for the ending. Light thought he was God and Mikami thought Light was God. So there was no reason for them to doubt.
He could have also:
>Asked Mikami to test the note before coming
>Asked Mikami to keep a page in his pocket for this specific moment
>Not asked Mikami to come inside after writing
>Hired people to follow them and kill everyone

The death penalty for any and all crime is bad policy.
The punishment for a crime serves not just to get bad guys off the street, but also as a deterrent.
If you fear that stealing a loaf of bread will result in your hands being chopped off, but you REEALLY need to steal that loaf of bread, then you might as well try and steal the whole bakery because the punishment is so severe. Go big or go home.

Or another way of putting it, Many criminals are only "partial criminals", that is to say, they may willing to commit a theft, but they are not willing to commit a murder, either out of morals, but in this case out of a consideration for the consequences.
The punishment for a theft is minor compared to the punishment for a murder. But if the punishment is the same, then that bank robber with the empty firearm might think
>well if they catch me it makes no difference, so I might as well just kill everyone

That goes right the fuck out the window once you've already conceded that it's okay to murder people for their crimes. So what level of crime deserves the Kira treatment? Should we stick to murderers and rapists? How about drug dealers? Drug users? Burglary? Theft? What degree of theft deserves death? Do we start extending it to whatever serves the "greater good" and start killing people who refuse mandatory vaccines? Keep in mind you have ONE RANDOM ANONYMOUS PERSON deciding these things for the entire planet. Are you willing to risk your life at the hands of someone whose morality and ethics and sense of justice you may not even agree with?

Basically, it's beneficially to be lenient for lesser crimes.
Many criminals feel a compulsion for the crimes they commit, it doesn't matter why, the simple fact is that they do.

Ironically this has actually happened with black people today. Many of them believe that any and all crime, hell just being black, carries with it the death penalty. And so when they are stopped by a police officer for a simple traffic infraction, they don't think they're going to get a simple ticket, or even just a warning, no, they are convinced that they are going to get the death penalty. And so they shoot the police officer, and initiate a high speed chase.

Similar in psychology to this is the treatment of prisoners of war, POW's

If you communicate to your enemies that you will kill all of them and take no prisoners, then none of them will surrender to you, you will be making your enemies more ferocious by being so bloodthirsty.
If instead you communicate that you will take them prisoner and treat them very well as prisoners, they will be well fed, protected, and not abused in the slightest, then you will be encouraging your enemies to surrender and not fight.

If your wife is behaving badly and you shout at her to shut up, and then she goes to the police with that and you're charged with domestic violence, and then you're put to death by kira... well you might instead think
>if the punishment is death anyway, I might as well kill my wife and go on the run, it won't make any difference if I get caught

Maybe you could troll them a little by telling them you already wrote them down, but they can erase it. Probably most people would just let themselves die though. And if there's no collateral damage then that rules out disasters like planes or trains crashing. Useless book. Take it back.

To some guy with a magic notebook who just looks at news articles and public records, it's all going to look the same. Any man who gets charged with rape because the woman changed her mind later and wanted to get revenge will be killed right alongside the rapists who actually forced themselves on women because the charges, the court cases, and the headlines all look the same.

L's plan to narrow down the search to Kanto was retarded, had a hundred moving parts that could all fail independently and relied on plot contrivance to work.
What conclusions could L draw if Kira didn't kill the stand-in?
>Kira doesn't kill lawmen
>Kira didn't watch the broadcast
>Kira was asleep or incapacitated
>Kira isn't in Kanto
>Kira realized he's being tricked and didn't fall for the bait

My only problem is that I can't think of any better plan to do what L did, and without him narrowing down the search you don't really have a story, so I end up just forgiving it for the sake of the story being allowed to happen.

His idea was not to just "kill all criminals" but become a "god" that people will believe in. This is why he st some point started making his victim leave cryptic messages and shit. The idea was to make people believe there's an omnipotent punisher who will kill them if they commit a crime. He kind of succeeded. By the end of the show there was a religion in development already

With all of this in considerstion though, you could justifiably narrow it down to the fact that you aren't dealing with an omniscient God at the very least.

You can't, later down the line L wonders if Kira really is a god, but immediately discards the idea, because an omniscient god wouldn't be threatened by the investigation enough to kill people pursuing him.
So the failure of the broadcast doesn't even prove that.

The bait wasn't a cop though, which means if it is a God, there are more restrictions/requirements in how killings are selected since the bait likely fit the target profile to a T.

I've always been curious about the neither heaven nor hell line. Like what happens to Death Note users? There was some theory that they become Shinigami because one of them from some OVA/movie recut featured a new shinigami in a tie that could be Light, but who the fuck knows. Just an interesting question.

After an devastating global war that wiped off most of the human population, interdimensional aliens wanted to preserve humanity, doing so by putting them in a matrix-like reality to prevent them from hurting themselves. The main problem was overpopulation, so they created a group of population managers known as shinigami to cull humans every now and then.

Disregarding that this is a translation, that doesn't say there isn't an afterlife. Just that all that die go to the same place. No reason that couldn't be a waiting room (purgatory) before the next step, but Light being a user gets pulled out of that waiting room into nothingness.

which is a plot hole in itself. only reason kira got his multi-kill rampage going was the criminals name and faces being made publicly known. Realistic counter, aside from the fact Kira only knew japanese and operated there, was simply stop publishing criminal convictions after his presence became known

other then that all that kira could do is either compromise himself by targeting local criminals around him or really big fishes like war mongering tyrants starting special military disasters

He misses 3 obvious facts.
1. Criminals don't think about consequences in crimes of passion.
2. Criminals think they'll get away with it in premeditated crimes.
3. Criminals will commit crimes they don't intend to walk away from. (mass shootings)
His methodology only impacts criminals who think they'll get caught, but are willing to go to prison for it.

The FBI agents has a specified time. You need to explicitly write down the time or else it defaults to the 40 seconds. The conditions are just for controlling the events before the death. If you write

If I had the deathnote I'd only go after petty crime.
Littered your cigarette butt?
Agonizing death by burning.

Took a turn without using your indicator?
Crushed by a truck.

Listening to loud music in public?
Death by seizure.

etc., always the same deaths for the same crimes so people would connect the dots.

I'd make being annoying/ a nuisance deadly as fuck just to see what happens.

Both thought that a criminal murdering people like that (no traces, seemingly at random, at great distances) was a power no one should have.

These should be capitol offenses.

Turning without an indicator could be a mistake, or a fault with the car. There's room for innocence there.
Not so with the littering and loud music in public - those are psychopathic people who must be executed for the good of humanity.

Firstly, how the fuck is Columbo supposed to solve the Kira case, realistically?
Like L was a genius in a universe with slight supernatural elements in shinigami. Despite that, and having the help of the FBI, he still wasnโ€™t able to take down Light.
Columbo may be smart, but he never dealt with a serial killer who can kill from anywhere on the planet. All heโ€™s done is solve mysteries on a tv show meant for your parents when they were in college.
Also wouldnโ€™t a match-up between Dexter and Light make more sense? Dexter has some supernatural elements like Doakes being able to read minds. Both characters are also serial killers with rightious goals, and both are canonically geniuses too.

Light's downfall was his hubris, he could have made himself entirely untraceable for years if he was more strategic from the very beginning.
>compile global crime databases into a list of millions of the worst criminals from all over the world
>write that they'll all die on a random day at a random time over the next decade or so
>Add a conditional that if they will die a natural death before then, they will die within the current year on a random day and time (and further conditionals for those who will die a natural death within that year, and so on, to prevent any deaths from occurring 40 seconds after they were written down)
>put down the notebook and don't touch it unless there's a particularly heinous new criminal you want to kill, which will then be drowned out in the noise of the other deaths
>L now has to find a killer based on thousands of deaths occurring at all hours of the day in all parts of the world
>if L somehow suspects that the deaths are based on face and name being publicly disclosed, it will already be too late and they'll still keep dying even if their names and faces are censored, thus making him probably abandon that theory
>sit back and enjoy the rest of your life as people fear Kira and you don't even have to lift a finger
