For a long time it was framed rather romantically in the popular imagination as the tragic but inevitable domination of one half of the original American spirit over the other. There's some very different shit going on in context, but let's start with the obvious: The Confederacy started the war by opening fire on an unarmed Federal ship carrying Federal supplies to Federal troops in a Federal fort on land that had been owned by the Federal government for 50 years, whereas Palestine and Ukraine were both invaded by foreigners.
