Before watching, I thought it was because of his crimes and for standing up against the system as some kind of really heavy handed way of saying that the system will fucking destroy you if you stand up to it but he only got raped because of these random prison guards REALLY getting angry that he called them fat on TV. That's it. The entire movie changes its trajectory based on a random event affecting these fucking side characters. Embarrassing disaster that will keep Joaquin awake at night for the rest of his life.

I never understood the popularity of the first film. They had the easiest possible path to a billion dollars. Just make a Bonnie/Clyde style movie with Harley and Joker driving around committing crimes and doing funny things until the end where Harley dies or something to bring in forced drama.
