It's a bit of both, IMO.
You have Dexter whining how
>I'm le hecking monster, I'm a sociopath who has no feelings
all over the series, but he never really does anything too dark or evil. Then they do try to make him do questionable things to make him seem more gray than he really is, like killing innocents but then either somebody makes the hard choice for him so his guilt is lessened or make the victim so cartoonishly unlikable that there's zero impact behind it.
The writers really want that "morally ambiguous dark anti-hero" rep, but ultimately they can't actually commit to it because what they have is a capeshit superhero and Dexter will lose the audience's sympathy if he goes too hard into edgy psycho territory and they can't commit to making Dexter an outright superhero because "muh glorifying serial killers/vigilantism".
I like Dexter killing Logan in theory, actually. For once it's Dexter acting like a sociopath he claims to be. It's just that scene and everything preceding it was written like retarded garbage for 20IQ retards because New Blood writers are fucking morons.
