Watching B:TAS properly for the first time as part of a DCAU marathon and holy shit, this is incredible. The animation, the character designs, the world design, the writing, the voice acting, the orchestral soundtrack. Everything is top notch and there's over 30 hours of this? It makes me jealous as a 97 zoomer to think that millenials grew up with entertainment of this quality.

This wasnt even on on saturday mornings, it was in the evening in my country, with classic Flintstones and Looney Tunes. Talk about prime time.

To put this into perspective even more, aside from the classic shit of Spiderman and his Amazing Friends and the Robocop cartoon saturday, we had Smurfs and Saber Rider in the afternoon weekdays. Truly the GOATest of times to ever grow up.

I'm on episode 15 right now (production order) and the Joker episodes so far have been pretty fun. They've done a good job at establishing the fact that he's Batman's primary foe. He's fun and diabolical and in a satisfyingly equal measure and Mark Hamill's voice acting is amazing. I was only ever familiar with Hamill's Joker through the Arkham games. I can see why people love his peformance so much.

Some of my favorites.
A bullet for Bullock
The trial
Almost caught him.
The terrible trio.
The circus.
There are many very good episodes, in fact I think it's harder to think about which ones are the bad ones.
There are other episodes whose names I don't remember, but I will give a description of some of them.
Bullock interrogates two police officers . Two rookies, one of them being Officer Montoya. Both are witnesses to a crime foiled by Batman. The police versions vary, but both agree that Batman is a supernatural being. This is supposedly one of Batman's earliest appearances.

Another episode where the Hatter manipulates Batman into experiencing an idealized life married to Catwoman without being Batman.
Another one where Hugo strange uses a brain machine on Bruce Wayne and discovers that he is Batman.

Batman investigates the disappearance of homeless people. To do so, he disguises himself and infiltrates Gotham's poor neighborhoods. He is soon captured, but in the struggle he is hit on the head and the contusion causes him amnesia.

Batgirl and Catwoman join forces.

Harley moves in with poison ivy.

The classic Batman vs. Scarecrow.

I'm 40 years old, just watching it for the first time right now and it's brilliant. It's the only American animation I've seen since the Looney Tunes era that is en par with the best Japanese stuff and it probably outdoes the latter on story, characterization, etc.

I can't get over how incredible the art direction and animation quality is -- smooth as butter.
Batman: TAS more than holds up, it should be required viewing for every American so they can appreciate the animation quality of its past.

Growing up my parents always used to give me shit for watching so much TV. Every minute I could get I was glued to it, usually watching Cartoon Network. There was always something to watch. Stuff on WB, CN, Disney, hell I didn't even discover spongebob on Nickelodean till after 2002. Looking back, spending that much time watching TV the best choice I could have ever made because we had the highest number of great shows from the 90s-early 2000s. Kids growing up today will never get that kind of lineup of cartoons made specifically with that kind of style and appeal ever again

obviously they had to change a few things (e.g. smoking) but it's also interesting what they "got away" with.

and purely structurally, every episode follows the three-act structure, like a mini-movie. good stuff.

She told me it would still be on when we got back but it obviously wasn't. I don't think I ever finished any of the DC animated stuff when I was a kid. I finished Spiderman and then moved onto comics and video games. I started reading loads of comics from the 80s and 90s lately and it put me in the mood to download all the old comic toons so I'm gonna go back and rewatch everything. I think Batman is the best though. I don't remember it ever really feeling like a kid's show like Spiderman and Turtles. Writing remains pretty solid but I dislike Bruce's characterization becoming more grim and serious. Bruce in Phantasm and BTAS has a solid sense of humor.

Phantasm > Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker > B:TAS > Batman Beyond => The Batman Adventures > Batman: The Adventures Continue > TNBA (TV show)
I haven't read TNBA (comics). Also it's worth noting that TNBA is still a 7.5/10 and a very solid show. It's just the worst of the BTAS universe.

I will forever be sad that this universe's Bruce has such a bad end. The show ends with a not so subtle demonstration of the futility in Batman's quest as he not only fails to save his best friend Harvey Dent but Two-Face actually develops a third personality, the last words spoken in BTAS are 'guilty, guilty, guilty' suggesting even the Judge (and by extension Batman) are just as guilty by their failure as the criminals. It was heavy stuff for a kid's show.

I wish we got more Zatanna, and that Bruce married and knocked her up.

I really like the β€œTime Flies” episode, how a rigidly held perspective on life and one bad day, slipping from one’s own ethos, can cause someone to just snap!

The β€œaren’t born this way, they’re made” is an idea that’s been mishandled, overused, and abused too often of late, but this show really tackles it well. It did it right. Current times it’s all political pandering, perfunctory and disingenuous, the skin-mask of true empathy, but BTAS gave it an honest, truly empathetic consideration. It has something to say, and I want movies and television to reach for that again. To look on these subjects with gentle eyes like this show did.

The Superman series is also very good in writing and animation. Of course, the villains of Man of Steel are not as charismatic as the criminals of Gotham City.
My favorite episode is the one where Batman disappears and Superman goes looking for him and even pretends to be Batman and has encounters with the Bat's rogues gallery.

I said "more kid friendly" not completely kid orientated. also: "Max was introduced in the second season of Batman Beyond to meet the demands from the WB network, who wanted a young teenage girl to be part of Terry's secret life, as a means to widen the series "female entry point." According to Stan Berkowitz, some of the creative team disliked the character, feeling it was forced on them and on occasion would find ways to deliberately write her out of the story."

And it didn't really pull any punches. The whole thing can get real dark, especially for a kids show.

This thread will disappear eventually, so before it does, I wanted to state a couple of episodes I really like:

1) Season 1 episode 7 β€œP.O.V”, where the mystery and legend of the Batman is seen from the outside via the testimony of beat-cops getting grilled over the events of a night in the job.

2) Season 1 episode 26 β€œAppointment in Crime Alley” where it just shows Batman grinding to help the citizens of Gotham, and the villain isn’t some standout plant girl in a green leotard but an unscrupulous land developer. The heavy could be any number of faceless money men in Bruce Wayne’s or even our own world. Very relatable and grounded almost to a spooky extent, and it was cool just seeing the Batman in almost his symbolically most pure, grinding against the ugly to save that which is good in this world. And the way that episode ends…kino.

Yah, I've been loving them. I would recommend starting with The Shadow, which was obviously a huge inspiration for Batman. The classic 1930s shadowy New York pulp hero. Doc Savage (a huge inspiration for Superman) is fairly enjoyable but he is a it too overpowered, but he does seem to capture that optimistic 1930s attitude that science, technology, and good strong virtues will save society. The Spider is my personal favorite (difficult to find his books); the character is like a mixture of Batman and Charles Bronson (yah, super kino. he just keeps blastin').

Its good, not as good as Batman The Animated Series. The animation isn't as good, the art style isn't as cool and the material isn't as dark; but its still good. Same goes for the Justice League series.

Its smarter and more interesting than the cape slop CGI fests we have now that are supposed to be for adults.
