The moral is, Ari Aster is deeply afraid of people and can't connect to a world of people driven by self interest. I think it's genuinely bold of him to share these stories (particularly this and Beau) in an era of "cringe culture" where everyone is supposed to be cool and have shit figured out. These movies remind me of Robert Crumb comics where it's like "okay, you didn't have to be THAT open about the inner workings of your mind," but I want away glad the artist did, and impressed by their technical skill.
I would also say that I don't think the movie is about* covid or politics in the way that Shawshank Redemption isn't about * the prison system, prison is just a backdrop against which the character study takes place.

Ari is a particularly nauseating Jewish stereotype
He cannot make anything genuine, he can only mock and be ironic
It's why he will never make anything worth anyone's time.
Hereditary will eventually have the same amount of respect given to the Babadook nowadays
Quite literally not worth your time or attention outside of the cheap shock slop
Just finished it, I'm glad Joaquin still enjoys starring as The Raped but this just felt like a step down from Beau Is Afraid.
The editing was schizophrenic, every time the tone took a shift I was just thinking "oh, okay..?"
COVID stuff was bound to happen eventually but it's weird to see it portrayed pretty neutrally here when it stops being a plot point after the first act. Felt like there were way too many ideas in the pot and Aster had to keep awkwardly changing gear to keep things engaging.
Genuinely laughed out loud at the "Firework" scene, the music is timed so perfectly for him to fight back and he just slinks away like a bitch

Never forget the tyranny that side of the aisle wanted to force on the rest of us that's why this film still feels tone deaf.

the way I interpreted the ending was a few ways
1. the sheriff was a bad husband and was making the wife worse. he loved and "cared" about her but he had her in the home alone with the old lady. she needed to find a purpose and go out. ( she had agoraphobia at first cured when she left)
she looked happy at the end .
he got "cucked" but she was sick and stuck.
2. he was evil and killed two innocent people and was going to frame an innocent black man. becoming a cripple was like karma or the universe doing justice
3. the evil nurse guy is just to show how evil and harmful nurses can be to cripples and old people.

I actually liked the way it was portrayed, like just as a minor detail, like the way Joaquin would cough every once in a while and I'd think
>Oh right, he has COVID
then the final chase and shootout where he's completely out of breath and wheezing because of that and his asthma. That final shootout had some nice sound editing too.
I thought the film also had a lot of attention to details, a lot of little setups/payoff, and was well directed. I might disagree with a lot of its underlying themes and messages, but there's good filmmaking there, and it does a nice job of building its own little version of the COVID-era world. There was something comfy about it despite the tension and anxiety surrounding the subject matter, which again parallels how COVID went in real life and how some people felt about COVID once it ended, a lot of the pro-mask, pro-lockdown people wanted to stay in that period forever.
>>213810321
Eggers has always wanted to remake Nosferatu. He did a play of it in college or someshit. So to paint it as a safe move is kind of ridiculous. Also Nosferatu really doesn't even have much cultural relevance here in the US. No one asked for it and he still delivered a very good film. Aster just keeps putting his Jewy neuroticism on screen and its getting more indulgent by the picture. This is like the bad Woody Allen shit. The only thing it's missing is his narcissism. Thank God Aster doesn't start in his own trash.

Right but apparently somehow that's all tied up with him being reasonably frustrated by the dehuamnizing way people were being treated by hypocritical ladder climbing politicians who didn't even follow their own rules or make their friends follow the rules they made the peons follow?
Fuck Aster and fuck this film for equating those ideas to murder because little nebbish Jewish bitchboys like Ari were afraid to go outside without their mask but then at the same time kneeled for a criminal that ODd and took to the streets in massive numbers while parishioners were told they couldn't sing in the same room.
You and that slimy little worm don't get to rewrite history to suit your conscience. This is why you lost and are losing more ground culturally, daily.

I'd rank it way above personally. I thought Midsommar was his worse and complete trash to be honest. Now how it ranks compared to Beau Is Afraid is more debatable for me. Beau Is Afraid benefits from not having the kind of underlying anti-whiteness that Midsommar and Eddington have, but I think Eddington has more memorable moments and is a more entertaining watch. if I had to pick one to rewatch tomorrow, I think I would pick Eddington over Beau Is Afraid, even though I haven't rewatched Beau Is Afraid since it came out and I just watch Eddington. They're so close they are almost tied though, but for now I'll go:
Hereditary>Eddington>Beau Is Afraid>Midsommar

If you ever worked as a caregiver you would know that shit like that happens. I did it for about two years. Never hit anybody or yelled at them but sometimes the people who you take care of act unruly because they are only used to having it their own way. It's hard on them that they can't do the things they used to be able to do, and it's more visible with older generations because they are used to putting their parents in a retirement home and just forget about them until it's their turn. The thing with Joaquin looked more like an involuntary spasm, but who knows. I'm thinking the guy isn't actually a real nurse or caregiver.

What sucks about MIDsomar is that it has a lot of beautiful shots and and the whole cult thing is cool but it's botched by the rest of the film. Aster has even admitted that he was in a bad state of mind because he broke up with his gf, but it's shit like that where you cannot take your moping and angst on the current project. Dish out a kino and then find a way to cope. Cus otherwise it affects the project, and it affects your actors, and it affects your crew, and now here we are 100% in the belief that Midsommar is not just his weakest film but his worst film. A creative can have a weak film, but when people say it's his worst then there's something wrong.

Beau is just so weird and interpretive. There's a lot to chew on there. Even if its messy. Maybe I'm some hipster but that goes a distance for me.
Eddington might be more entertaining because its real easy to follow and its traditional in how the stakes gradually increase over the story. But the premise just wasn't incredibly interesting to me. Hereditary is for sure his best though

I don't see much of a similarity between him and Solondz. Aster just rips off other jewish filmmakers wholesale, with every new film he picks a new one to ripoff. With Hereditary he was doing Roman Polanski, with Beau Is Afraid he was doing Charlie Kaufman and now with Eddington he's doing the Coen brothers. I don't know what that makes him, jew Quentin Tarantino? That's either him or S. Craig Zahler.

I went in knowing that it wasn't going to be a straightforward horror movie. Beau was too fucking long. It's almost like 3 movies in one. So there's too much going on. But overall it was nice to watch. Like after how serious Midsommar was, Beau was basically hyper fantasy. It's definitely more psychedelic.

I don't know, to me it seemed really obvious, the small town America aspect reminded me of Fargo, as I mentioned in a previous thread I got a Lebowski vibe from a lot of different things, the shot of the bum coming into town reminded me a lot of the tumbleweed was one that comes to mind, then also the fact that it's a period piece that's set within the same decade the film was made and in both cases have an underlying political theme(Lebowski with the Gulf war and jewish involvement in the neoconservative movement and the left/right divide being reflected in the Dude/Walter, Eddington being more obvious) and Joaquin's performance also reminded me a little bit of Jeff Bridge's, maybe it was the quirkiness or maybe just the beard. I also saw a bit of No Country in there, obviously with the neo-western aspect of it. There's also that clip I saw recently:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-SWQGpe8pc
He talks about the Coens and how they don't like their characters, and obviously with Eddington there's a lot of that in there, I mean just look at what happens to Joe in the end.

Pro. They changed from hiding as Antifa to hiding as white supremacists (Brown mayor and son get killed, black guy got killed, they're going to use that as proof that a white supremacist group killed these people). So they basically raised up a white power golem to rise above the town. also does anyone know what the logo on the plane could be for? it's a hand basically grasping the world. I know some American spy group satellite has an octopus engulfing the earth, which people compared to the logo of Spectre, which are the bad guys in 007.

You're both missing A Serious Man. Sy Ableman is such an evident reference for Vernon. Both movies have a protagonist that's desperately trying to find stable footing in the 'mystery' while the whole world is rug-pulling him. Then they both get their comeuppance by the end after God put them on trial. Joe Cross kind of deserved it, while Larry Gopnik didn't particularly.

After watching Hereditary and Midsommar as they released when I was longer I thought Ari Aster was kind of a meme, and I'm not a huge fan of Phoenix so I skipped Beau, and only watched Eddington out of curiosity, ended up loving it, watched Beau, loved it as well (as a movie about paranoia). Last night I got my hands on a Midsommar Director's Cut remux, and it was absolute kino. Will rewatch Hereditary next.
Didn't expect to turn into a fan of his work. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

its been a while since I watched a serious man. It did feel like the movie is being slightly blibical at times. Like the homeless guy is almost a blight on the town but not really. He clearly needs help but nobody knows how to help him, so this guy is almost like a prophet, as a rambling lunatic. Also like
>>213811250
Feels like they erected a false idol. The screens show people scrolling through the net worshipping false idols. Somebody even mentioned that it looked like a demonic deity. Joe Cross is between being a good guy and a bad guy. At the beginning in the store. He helps with his wife's only hobby. He wants kids. I still feel like the homeless guy released on the town as the first sign of a plague and an instigation by people running the show.
Also can my thoughts about that final shot: was the data center progress for Eddington? Or was it really another excuse to hide a data harvesting site? It was built far away from the town. It might have opened jobs for the town. In some years, like most cities affected by a new Amazon warehouse or tech expansion (or casino lmao) it does open new jobs. Eventually new houses and stores and buildings might grow the town. Or is it a monument to the victors and a sign of evil? Is it a warning to be wary of these types of sites?

he was pretty much the only religious element in the whole movie, which seems odd because those small bumfuck towns are usually heavily religious

I think it's left ambiguous because the child sex abuse he describes is almost word for word taken from famous accounts in the dutroux sex scandal in belgium. I don't think it's innocent that they namedrop that country when he talks about the couple behind him.

No one's brought it up, but holy fuck. The sheriff getting slapped twice was one of the most humiliating things I've seen in a film. I was wincing in cringe, it made me actually sympathize with Joaquin's character when he got the kill even though at that point, he had completely lost it

they can do whatever to try to hide their biases and intentions but it always shows in what they're interested in using as their setting or foil. The madness of 2020 flowed out from urban America to the rest, not in. It was a story of mass urban collective insanity led by women and niggers and the rest of us were moreso a curious/disturbed audience than participants in this shit.

See, this movie steers convo towards the demographics that are guilty of sowing chaos, not the power structure most capable of giving orders/mandates or funding chaos against the pre-2019 socioeconomic order. Mass media had more power sowing fear + giving orders, but Aster sticks to online influencers as the threat.
