He can feel a disturbance in the time stream or whatever and understands what they are trying to do, so gathers the remnant of his army to head to Earth. Ultimately you do whatever the fuck you need to do to maintain IW Thanos as the villain in EG. All sense of momentum and such died when IW Thanos died and it's so shitty. It actually would have been cathartic in EG if the same man that snapped his fingers got snapped himself. EG Thanos has no greater history with the people he's fighting, and they don't even fully seem to undersand he's from 2014 when Thor says shit like "Let's kill him properly this time"

DOOM is actually the real Stark resurrected and controlled by Extremis because his brain isn't healed from damage yet.
He pretend to be a Variant. His real plan is to cut-off the universe from the others to protect it, but it would destroy all the connecting universes. He pretend that some dying worlds are trying to take over the real world.
Some of the X-Men die, but then another universe connects with the real one and the Nu-X-Men come (Fassbender, Jlaw, etc. Not sure if they will cameo themselves, but at least Hoult/Beast is confirmed).
During the new battle, The Void connects with the real universe too, so we get DP and another Wolverine. DP won't be doing the 4th wall thing in Doomsday. He's just a funny guy.
In the end, Stark takes control of Extremis and merges the universes instead of destroying them.
some characters merge with their Variant so we get new actors for them.
Stark becomes the new Director of the new SHIELD. But his face is scared. He tart to wear a red and silver version of the Iron Man costume like the one from the 90s comics 24/7. Downey will only have to do voice acting for his cameos in the following movies.

The obvious solution to me is, when they bring everyone back, Thanos gets his army again. He would have wiped out half his own army, so when Hulk restores things, Thanos sees people come back and has a standing army of troops. Thanos is pissed, and travels to earth to take them out. You don't need anything else.

Problem is, you have to then keep Gamora dead and you don't get the whole 2nd Nebula. Which, was kind of wasted anyway. They didn't have 2014 Nebula use the gauntlet and die. Which would have been fucking cool.

Downey is a good actor, he can do DOOM and make us forget about Iron Man if he wants to. But I'm not sure the filmmakers are gonna let him do that.

Thanos needs someone to play off of is the issue. In EG he has Gamora and the 2 Nebulas. If you use farm Thanos, who is he talking to and working with? The comic was smart to give him Mephisto. I fully agree they should have kept it the same Thanos. Lines like "you took everything from me" and "I don't even know who you are" would hit harder if it wasn't some time displaced guy.

Now that I am responding to you my old ideas for redoing EG are coming back and in line with the deeper connection Thanos has with fundamentals like time, soul, etc. he does interact with this sort of ghostly visage of Gamora. He's fully aware it isn't actually her, it's something strange and cosmic and she's semi transparent, far more gaunt, etc. but it's something he can interact with after Nebula leaves his ass behind on the farm planet and before he gets to Earth.
