He's just a very well written double crosser. The season 1 finale, the preds have a truce to deal with the aliens, the vok. Tarantulas betrays the truce. Turns out, not just to benefit the preds but also cause he does not like the Vok. It's all actually retroactive. The writers just realized Tarantulas doing all these things for greater purpose was more interesting.

You have to remember, the show was always really flexible. It was not Earth in season 1, the writers only committed to this in season 2, which if they didn't, would have meant no Ark ect. BW writers just found great ways to expand on most of the characters into season 2 and 3.

It's fudged to allow new bad guys to be introduced as well as good guys. The whole "predacon shell programming" thing is actually stupid as fuck. It takes away free will of characters. They never even bothered with this for Quickstrike, dude was just psycho and an asshole and was Axalon crew. Pretty much all the Protoform characters are terrible co-workers.

Her Maximal Spark is relevant cause if you change history to make autobots lose, and maximals never exist, she never exists.

Season 2 and 3 is the Predacons trying to change time. Tarantulas is not a Decepticon or Autobot in origin so he doesn't care if the whole Ark gets wiped out, believing his existence will be fine. Tarantulas at one point does try to murder BW Megatron, who at the time had G1 Megatrons spark inside him. He survives though. No one ever succeeds in changing time in the show, the Maximals always succeed in stopping them.

They for sure could have made it worse. Cheetor and Black Arachnia are passable versions of themselves. Optimus, Rattrap, Silverbolt and Rhinox are all character assassinations. Megatron is... debatable. I would have preferred the vehicons to just be new characters. Jetstorm was fun and Brian Drummond kills it as him. Why make new characters to just reveal them to be old characters. And also, why bring characters back just to overhaul them? It's insane they made such bad choices. It's such a weird call. The budget for getting the voice cast back was high, but then you don't just do more of what people liked about them?

It's a lot more complicated than that, there's the whole episode where they have to delete the program Tarantulas put in there and she only does it because she was gonna die or something for some reason I can't remember if she didn't. They also sold her flip to the Maximals pretty well, which she does before she even formally "becomes" one in the uh, programming sense, or whatever you want to call it. Between working with a bunch of backstabbing psychopaths all the time, Tarantulas constantly stalking/trying to mindbreak her, and most crucially, her boss wanting to enact a scheme that would erase her from existence in the future if it succeeded (and being the only maximal protoform Predacon not too stupid or crazy to realize that), you can see why she would jump ship.

I never liked Transformers as a kid but I was fucking obsessed with Beast Wars. Even had that shitty game on the PSX. I dunno what made Beast Wars so different but even to this day like nothing else about Transformers is appealing to me. I even hate that they're sharing the universe with G.I. Joe in the new comic canon.

Beast Wars is far more character driven and more a sci-fi show. It feels like star trek. While all other transformers properties are more space opera and like star wars.
