Mainland movies are usually straight up ass with terrible pacing and dialogue, and often terrible translations. Most of the decent Chinese movies come out of Taiwan, which basically rips off Korea, anyway, and Hong Kong, which, outside of their shit Lunar New Year comedies, has slowed down to a trickle.

They’re also subject to a lengthy approval/censorship process in the mainland, so they often stick to very safe topics they know will get approved and sell. So you basically get, Journey to the West, Three Kingdoms, War against Japan and period imperial court drama shit, none of which really sells in the West.

It is genuinely a mystery to me why K-Dramas are more popular than C-Dramas.
K-Dramas are basically J-Drama slop with better lighting. Tonnes of C-Dramas are Wuxia slop sure, but they are still far more interesting and better written than K-Dramas, then you get the more serious historical and scifi dramas from China which absolutely shit over even most Western television.

The TV shows are 30 to 50 hours long. The story could be told in 6 hours but they film every movement of a character, like there is no editing at all. They want to fill airtime.
